Yorkshire v Gloucestershire, National League First Division, 1999, (Round 2) D J Rutnagur - 25 April 1999
Yorkshire struggle to victoryYorkshire (147-8) beat Gloucestershire (145) by 2 wkts YORKSHIRE made desperately hard work of securing a two-wicket win with 10 balls to spare against Gloucestershire at Headingley. Gloucestershire bowled and fielded impressively in defending a very modest total to which they were confined by the steady aim of Darren Gough, Ryan Sidebottom and Craig White. White followed up his capture of four wickets - including that of Matt Windows, who batted well for his 36 - by scoring 49 off 39 balls which enabled Yorkshire to resort to hard graft in the crisis which followed White's dismissal. Two young apprentices, James Averis, who took three for 17, and Gary Fellows, who made the winning hit in near darkness after holding the innings together while the last 33 runs were accumulated, distinguished themselves during the tense finish. Had Gloucestershire, who lost their last six wickets in 21 balls, not been bowled out nine overs under the distance, the Duckworth-Lewis method might well have come into question, for even half an hour before the scheduled finishing time the light was almost impossible.
