Guyana v Windwards The Barbados Nation - 17-19 July 1999 Day 1: Guyana snatches up quick wickets Petra-Ann Peters Guyana 161, Windwards 16-3 Guyana struck back to claim three wickets after having been dismissed cheaply on a rain shortened opening day of their Nortel Networks Youth Tournament match yesterday. The Guyanese innings was dominated by an innings of exactly 50 from Narsingh Deonarine and 38 from opener Sewnarine Chattergoon, with only three other batsmen reaching double figures. Deonarine struck his fifth four over mid-wicket to reach a half-century, but next ball hit a return catch to spinner Alston Bobb. Leg-spinner Carmilal Alexander took four for 50. After bowling his first six overs for 20 runs, opening bowler Colvert Hooper came back and mopped up the tail to finish with three for 27. The Windwards, who were beaten inside two days by Barbados in their first match, were 16 for three after 16 balls when rain brought an end to the day six overs and two balls early. They lost the wickets of Devon Smith (6) who, after square cutting Dasrat through the covers for a boundary, played an extravagant drive the next delivery and offered a comfortable catch to Deonath Baksh at first slip. He was followed by Lebert Serieux, who was also caught by Baksh in the slips off the bowling of Bux. Night watchman Alexander was run out without scoring.
