Day1: Excellent cricket after a delayed start

The Friday and early Saturday morning rain delayed start of the Second Test at Peshawar. Although the ground staff was able to dry up the outfield by using the super-sopper, some wet patches on the pitch and the bowlers' run-up needed further drying.

The play having been delayed till 3:00 PM, the two teams and officials were introduced to the President of Pakistan Muhammad Rafiq Tarar.

Pakistan made four changes in the team, bringing in Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi, Arshad Khan and Atiq-uz-Zaman in place of Wasim Akram, Wajahatullah Wasti, Saqlain Mushtaq and Moin Khan. Wicket-keeper Atiq is the lucky winner of a test cap.

Of late, the Pakistani selectors have been doing some queer things, incomprehensible even to the ardent cricket lovers. They seem to have developed a fancy for "off-spin", perhaps considering the art of "leg-spin" having become redundant. Their criminal neglect of Mushtaq Ahmed, one of the best leg-spinners in the game, has not only demoralised the player but also taken away the much-needed guile from the Pakistan bowling.

In the team selected for Carlton and United Series in Australia, two off-spinners, Saqlain and a rookie Shoaib Malik were included but no leg-spinner. Now for the Peshawar test, when Saqlain is unfit, Arshad Khan an ordinary 'off-spinner' almost fading out has been preferred over a quality leg-spinner like Mushtaq. To console him for the victimisation, Mushie was called for the practice camp but returned home without assigning any reasons.

For his impressive performance behind the stumps and some good innings played as an opening batsman, Humayun Farhat remained in the limelight during the last two years. He was considered to be a 'wicket-keeper in waiting' for the Pakistan team. Now when the occasion came for the award of the test cap, Atiq-uz-Zaman has walked in from nowhere. Such antics and instances of injustice, if gone unchecked, will cause harm to Pakistans' cricket.

The ground and the pitch having been declared fit for play, the game started at 3:00 PM, Pakistan skipper Saeed Anwar having won the toss opted to field. Sri Lanka took a confident start against a fiery attack by Shoaib Akhtar and Waqar Younis. As predicted, the pitch kept helping the batsmen. Sri Lanka reached 50 in 17 overs but lost the first wicket at the score of 58, when Jayasuriya was clean bowled by Shoaib for 30.

By the end of 25 overs, Sri Lanka was 67 for 1. In the next over, Sri Lanka lost its second wicket when Arnold was caught behind the stumps off Abdur Razzaq for 2.

Being one-up in the series the Sri Lankans played a steady game taking no risks. The two wickets that they lost were on account of excellent bowling by the Pakistani bowlers. The day's play ended with Sri Lanka at 88 for 2 scored in 37 overs. Atapattu (30) and de Silva (17) are holding the crease. Considering the conditions that prevailed, it was an excellent display of batting by Sri Lanka.

The Day 1, Session reports are appended below:

RAIN CAUSES DELAY: It rained the whole of Friday flooding the ground. The pitch and the square were covered but the outfield had to bear the brunt. The inspection of pitch and the ground carried out jointly by Match Referee Brian Hastings, Umpires and the two captains revealed that the out field was fine but some portions of the pitch were still wet. Apart from the nature's help in the form of sun and wind the ground staff is applying artificial methods including the use of a super-sopper to make the ground playable. In view of the adverse ground condition, the game could not start at the right time. The speculations are that the match may start after lunch. The umpires have however, decided to conduct another inspection of the ground at 11 A.M. (PST) to give the final verdict. Some water having crept into the pitch from under the covers, it is quite likely that the track changes its character from what was already predicted.

Four changes have been made in the Pakistan team. While Shoaib Akhtar, the latest sensation in fast bowling has replaced injured Wasim Akram, Arshad Khan an off spinner from Peshawar is taking over from Saqlain Mushtaq, Shahid Afridi and Atiq-uz-Zaman have come in place of Wajahatullah Wasti and Moin Khan. The young wicket keeper Atiq-uz-Zaman will be playing his first test match.

After the 11:00 A.M. inspection which included both captains, it was decided to have another inspection at 12:15 A.M. hoping that the sun will dry out any remaining wet spots.

THE TEST EVENTUALLY STARTS: After the ground and pitch showing some semblance of fitness coupled with a prolonged spell of disappointment and waiting for the big crowd at the Shahi Bagh Stadium, the play eventually started at 3 p.m.

Sanath Jayasuriya and Saeed Anwar went out for the toss, Brian Hastings the match Referee supervising. While Jayasuriya called, Saeed won the toss and elected to field.

The game commenced with Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu opening the Sri Lanka inning against the bowling of Waqar Younis. On 4th ball of the first over Atapattu drove Waqar to mid off for an impressive four. Amongst a roar from crowd, speedster Shoaib Akhtar who had missed the Rawalpindi test on account of injury launched a fiery attack from the other end, conceding only a no ball in the over.

In his second over, Waqar was punished by Atapattu for two consecutive fours, the first on mid-off and the second on mid-wicket. Sri Lanka was 14 in 3 overs. Shoaib Akhtar came up to bowl his second over, again conceding a no ball followed by a four by Atapattu filtering through slip and the gully. Shoaib Akhtar generated a good pace but could not find his rhythm. Striving for the same, he was driven by Jayasuriya to the covers for a sizzling four. A further addition of 5 runs to the total through an overthrow by Shahid Afridi in a Waqar Younis over took Sri Lanka to 30 for no loss in the first 6 overs, with Atapattu (17) and Jauasuriya (11). The pitch providing no help to the bowlers appeared to be a perfect track for the batsmen who continued scoring runs at a steady pace.

With off spinner Arshad Khan taking over from Waqar, the first bowling change came in the 11th over while he commenced the over with a no ball, he was beautifully driven by Jayasuriya to fine leg for a four. In Arshad's second over, a loud bat-pad appeal against Jayasuriya aroused lot of excitement. Jayasuriya, however, silenced the crowd by square cutting Arshad for a four in his next over. Sri Lanka reached its 50 in 14 overs.

In the 16th over Shoaib was driven to the covers for a four by Jayasuriya but on the next ball he was clean bowled by Shoaib on a ball that moved in but kept low. Jayasuriya was out for 30 with Sri Lanka at 58 for 1.

Russel Arnold joined Atapattu and continued playing defensively. After bowling a thrilling spell of 10 overs, Shoaib was replaced by Abdur Razzaq, the medium pacer who had created a sensation by bowling out six Sri Lankan players in the Rawalpindi test. The two batsmen trying no flashy strokes. Sri Lanka was 67 for 1 at the end of 25 overs with Atapattu (26) and Arnold (2). In the next over, Sri Lanka lost its second wicket when Arnold was smartly caught by Atiq-uz-Zaman off Abdur Razzaq for 2, without addition to the total of 67. This was the young wicket keeper's first catch in test cricket.

In 33rd over Aravinda de Silva hooked Abdur Razzaq for a four to enthrall the crowd after a long slumber. Shahid Afridi came in to bowl and was square cut by de Silva for a four. The over was not impressive by any standards.

On the completion of 37 over the day's play ended with Sri Lanka at 88 for 2 with Atapattu (30) and de Silva (17) at the crease.

The less than half of a day's play made possible by putting a hectic effort to dry up the ground and pitch proved to be an evenly poised game. While the Pakistan bowlers did a wonderful job by claiming two wickets, Sri Lanka batted extremely well, taking no risks but still piling up a good score of 88 for 2. To make up the time lost, the game shall start at 9.30 PST, 04:30 GMT during the next days of the match.

Day2: THE MATCH EVENLY POISED

To compensate for the time lost on Sunday on account of rain, the play started 30 minutes earlier today. Sri Lanka resumed the inning at 88 for 2 amidst the cheers of a half-full stadium. The over-night not outs, Marvan Atapattu (29 ) and Aravinda De Silva (18 ) commenced batting against the bowling of speed merchant Shoaib Akhtar and Medium pacer Abdur Razzaq. Pakistan's attack had lost quite a bit of spark on account of the absence of Waqar Younis, who did not take the field for being indisposed.

The pitch having slowed down was not helping the bowlers. A long run up by Shoaib Akhtar was proving futile. The batsman having adopted a defensive posture only 9 runs were scored in the first 30 minutes of the game. Sri Lanka however, hoisted 100 of the inning in the 47th over. Pakistan missed its first break-through when Inzamam failed to hold Atapattu off Razzaq in the slips.Aamer Sohail met with first success of the day when he trapped De Silva LBW for 33 Sri Lanka was 121 for 3. Marvan Atapattu having completed his 50 in 183 balls was playing with immense confidence.

Despite the pitch providing no assistance to the bowlers, the Sri Lankan batsmen were neither taking any risks or resorting to brisk scoring. The score board thus moved slowly. A strome to the boundary line was like a precious gift for the spectators, who used to burst in applause at every four. At lunch, Sri Lanka was 179 for 3 with Atapattu (67) and Jayawardene (34) putting up a valiant defence. The pre-lunch session of 40 overs yielded 91 runs. The pace of scoring suited Sri Lanka's strategy of a defensive battle quite well.

Sri Lanka lost its 4th wicket at 186 when Jayawardene was caught by Shahid Afridi at cover off Aamer Sohail. Dilshan was the next to be bowled by Arshad Khan for 13. Sri Lanka was 207 for 5.

Shoaib Akhtar, who was not finding his rhythm and had been warned twice by umpire John Hampshire for running on the pitch during the follow up, came to bowl in full cry. He bowled Marvan Atapattu for a very solid inning of 75. Infact, he was the batsman who put the Sri Lankan batsmen on the path of building up a fighting score. Continuing with his aggressive bowling Shoaib got Kaluwitharana caught by wicket keeper Atiq-uz-Zaman for 4. The young debutante had taken the catch with an acrobatic dive. Sri Lanka was 221 for 7. Wickeramasinghe was Shoaib's next victim having been bowled for a duck. After 100 overs Sri Lanka was 223 for 8. The last 4 wickets having fallen in quick succession, the Sri Lnakan batsmen had one into the defensive groove again.

After took the new ball after tea and met with immediate success Abdur Razzaq and Shoaib Akhtar shared a wicket each to dismiss Sri Lanka. Murlaitharan coming in at no. 11, played a gallant inning of 22 runs. He was the one who delighted the crowd the most.

Sri Lanka was all out for 268 runs. With the Pakistan bowling depleted to almost half of its strength, it was a commendable performance by the bowlers.

PAKISTAN FACES A CHALLENGING TOTAL

Facing a fighting score of 268, score Pakistan started resolutely scoring 50 in 17 overs, but losing the wicket of Aamer Sohail immediately after Pakistan was 67 for 1 at the end of the day with Saeed Anwar (37) and Yousuf Youhana (1) at the crease.

The match is evenly poised. To take any bad over the Sri Lankan total of 268, the Pakistani batsmen will have to concentrate fully on batting.

The end of the first inning with only uidicate, which way the game is likely to tilt.

The detailed session reports are appended below:

MORNING SESSION-DULL AND DREARY BATTING

The Pakistan team took the field without the ace speedster Waqar Younis declared indisposed. Razzaq opened the bowling to Marvan Atapattu at the Sri Lanka's overnight score of 88 for 2. A moment of suspense arose when Atapattu took a cheeky single, rendering his partner De Silva vulnerable to a run out chance. The throw from Younis Khan was a little above the stumps. Shoaib Akhtar took charge of the bowling from the other end. Only 4 runs were added to the total in 5 overs.

The pitch having slowed down, Shoaib Akhtar had to apply extra force to raise the ball to the desired height. In the process he lost his accuracy. Abdur Razzaq being an easy paced bowler, however maintained the correct line and length from the other end. The batsmen felt uncomfortable facing him. In the next over, there was a loud appeal for LBW against Atapattu turned down by the umpire. On the next ball Atapattu drove Shoaib to mid off for a 4. Sri Lanka was 26 for 2, Atapattu (34) and De Silva (21) batting. Only 9 runs were scored in 30 minutes play. Shoaib was warned by the umpire for running on the pitch, putting the speedster under pressure.

Arshad Khan took over from Shoaib. Sri Lanka hoisted 100 of the inning in the 47th over when De Silva hooked Razzaq for a single. Only 12 runs were scored in the 10 overs bowled since morning. In the next over Atapattu was rewarded for 5 runs on account of an overthrow by Shahid Nazir, substituting for Waqar in the field. A golden chance for Pakistan's first break through of the day went waste when Atapattu snicked a delivery from Razzaq in the slips where Inzmam missed it by inches. Aamer Sohail replaced Razzaq and met with success in his 2nd over when he trapped De Silva LBW for 33. Sri Lanka was 121 for3 in 55 overs. Mahela Jayawardene took the crease and square cut Aamer for a 4. In the next over he drove Aamer again to mid wicket for another 4. A little later Shoaib Akhtar came over for the second spell. Marvan Atapattu completed his 50 in 183 balls giving a classical display of defensive batting. Tied up by the Pakistan bowlers Sri Lanka remained struck up at 141 for 3 wickets. A cover drive to Shoaib Ahtar by Jayawardene for 2 therefore brought a big applause from the crowd who were getting bored by the Sri Lankan in activity. Despite the wicket offering no assistance to bowlers, the Sri Lankan batsmen were making no efforts to open up.

Shahid Afridi called upon to bowl, brought a little thrill when he was hit for a 4 by Jayawardene, taking Sri Lanka to 153 for 3. At lunch Sri Lanka was 179 for 3, with Atapattu (67) and Jayawardene (34) holding the fort with courage. The morning session during which 40 overs were bowled in 151 minutes yielded 91 runs. Sri Lanka already one up in the series, the type of defensive batting that they displayed suited them well. It was, however, pretty dull and boring from the spectators point of view.

FALL OF WICKETS ADD LIFE TO THE GAME

Play resumed after lunch with Sri Lanka at 179 for 3, Jayawardene (34) taking the strike. In 82nd over of the inning, another success came the Pakistan way when Jayawardene, broke his composure by hitting Aamer Sohail to covers, was caught by Shahid Afridi for a very well scored 36. Sri Lanka was 186 for 4. Having struck twice since morning and pushing the batsman hard with his in-coming deliveries, Aamer was driven to covers with a four by Jayawardene a little later.

After having received two warnings from umpire John Hampshire for running on the pitch, Shoaib returned for his third spell of bowling. In the 88th over Sri Lanka completed 200 of the inning. Tilkeratne Dilshan who took the crease after the fall of Jayawardene, having scored 13 runs in 28 balls was bowled by Arshad Khan on a delivery that came in slightly. Sri Lanka was 207 for 5.

Just as Romesh Kaluwitharana took the crease, Marvan Atapattu who had defended the Sri Lankan fort with tremendous confidence was bowled by Shoaib after playing a very solid inning of 75. This being the highly prized wicket, applause from the crowd was unprecedented.

Chaminda Vaas took the crease and hit Shoaib's no ball for a sparkling 4. Having scored a very useful half century in the Rawalpindi test, he could not be taken lightly. Continuing with his aggressive bowling Shoaib met with another success when Kaluwitharana trying to pull the short pitched delivery towards the fine leg was caught by the wicket-keeper for 4. Young Atiq-uz-Zaman having taken the catch with an acrobatic dive to his left. Sri Lanka was 221 for 7. With the Pakistan bowling depleted to almost half of its strength, it was a commendable performance by the bowlers.

Wickeramasinghe came in to bat but unable to face Shoaib's ferocious bowling, was clean bowled for a duck. Sri Lanka was 223 for 8. The 100th over of the inning passed with Sri Lanka at 233 for 8. The last four wickets having fallen in quick succession, the two batsmen fell into the defensive groove, like the one that we saw in the morning session. By tea time, Sri Lanka was 235 for 8, Vaas (10) and Pushpakumara (5) batting. Only 56 runs had been scored in this session.

PAKISTAN'S INNING

Facing a fighting target of 268 runs, Pakistan opened its first inning with Saeed Anwar and Aamer Sohail, against the bowling of Pushpakumara and scored 6 runs in the first over. Chaminda Vaas bowled from the other end with a field of three slips and a gully.

In the fourth over Aamer Sohail pushed Pushpakumara to square leg for a 4. Pakistan was 15 for no loss. In his next over the bowler was again hit for a sizzling 4 in the cover by Saeed Anwar. The two batsmen continued with the effort to consolidate the inning when Muralitharan was brought to bowl in the 10th over. The batsmen taking no liberties, the ten overs ended with Pakistan at 30, Saeed (14) and Aamer (11) holding the crease.

Incidentally in the 12th over of the inning, Muralitharan had only bowled five balls when umpire John Hampshire declared the over. Pushpakumara came for his second spell and was driven by Saeed Anwar to extra cover for a simmering boundary, punishing him for two more fours in his next over. Pakistan crossed 50 in 17 overs.

Sri Lanka achieved its first success with the ball when Aamer Sohail was caught by De Silva in the slips off Jayawardene for 22. The fielder's expressions of agony indicated that it was not an easy catch. Pakistan suffered the first blow at a score of 54. Yousuf Youhana took the crease and opened his account on the very first ball scoring 2 runs.

Saeed delighted the crowd by driving Muralitharan to covers for a 4. Playing resolutely Saeed also drove Jayawardene to covers for 4. After 25 overs Pakistan was 66 for 1 with Saeed (36) and Youhana (2).

When the last two overs of the day were left, skipper Jayasuria took the ball himself to try his luck. On the last ball of his over, there was a very forceful appeal for caught behind against Saeed Anwar but was declined by umpire Nazir Junior. The day's play ended with Pakistan at 67 for 1 scored in 30 overs, with Saeed Anwar (37) and Youhana (3) holding the crease.

Day3: A Day Disaster For Pakistan

Robin Jackonan inspecting the pitch predicted that it would help the spinners. With Murlitharan emerging as the hero, the prediction came quite true. Infect it was Muralitharan who kept the Pakistan batsmen under constant pressure, the other bowlers taking advantage from it.

Pakistan resumed the inning at the overnight score of 67 for 1. It was a day of crisis for Pakistan. Although the wicket was not as dangerous or unplayable as the result showed, most of the batsmen threw away their wickets.

The first wicket of the morning fell with an addition of 15 runs to the total when Yousuf Youhana playing a lazy shot was caught behind the stumps for only 8. Youhana one of the most trusted youngster in the side has been a constant failure since the start of the series. Basically a batsman with a tremendous potential he is getting out on poor shots.

Pakistan was 82 for two. The pitch having lost its bounce the ball was not coming on the bat, posing difficulties to the batsman . Though Pakistan's batsman were showing no aggressive designs , Muralitharan was not only maintaining an emaculate line but also prompting the batsman towards rashness. He succeeded in his designs when Saeed Anwar got out on irresponsible shot against Jayasuria after he had scored invaluable 74 runs. Pakistan lost was 137 for 3.

Despite such a loss, the Pakistani batsmen were not playing with responsibility. Younis Khan (8) , Shahid Afridi (4) Abdur Razzaq (0) Atiq-uz-Zaman (1) Waqar Younas (3) Arshad Khan (0) lost their wickets cheaply. The disaster having struck, Pakistan was done in the dumps with 177 for 9 . Inzamam was the bravest man to hold the fort but was running out of partners in such a quick succession that he could not possibly prolong his innings.

Had the batsman at the other end not thrown away the wickets, Inzimam was quite capable of taking his side out of crisis. Shoaib was the last man out, bringing an end to Pakistan's inning with a miserable score of 199. After playing a prolific inning of 58 not out under tremendous pressure, Inzaman-ul-Haq returned to the pavillion receiving a hero's welcome.

With only three batsmen reaching the double figures, it was a shocking performance by the Pakistan team. With an impressive haul of 4 wickets for 77 runs, Muralitharan was the Sri Lankan hero of the day. He had literally routed Pakistan.

SRI LANKA TAKES THE DAY

With the advantage of a 69 runs lead Sri Lanka commenced the 2nd ining with their regular openers, losing Jayasuria with only 7 runs on the board. It was a good battle between the two sides. While the Pakistani bowlers were in their full cry, the Sri Lankans were facing them with absolute confidence, scoring runs at the desired pace. The wickets also fell at regular intervals. Sri Lanka lost 5 wickets for 109 runs.

The play was stopped 3 overs earlier with Sri Lanka at 129 for 5. Russel Arnold played a definate knock of 63 and was still holding the crease.

Sri Lanka having a lead of 198 runs with 5 wickets in hand is in a perfectly advantageous position to dictate terms to Pakistan. Pakistan's depleted bowling shall have to put in giagantic effort to prevent Sri Lanka from raising the lead to the level of invincibility.

Pakistan's first inning score of 199 was not enough to cope with a brilliant Sri Lanka team. They will have to bat with full concentration in the second inning and curb the tendency of throwing away wickets, if they want to save the match.

The Day 3, Session reports are appended below:

NOT A BRILLIANT START

The morning started with Robin Jackman explaining condition of the pitch and complaining of the bowlers especially Shoaib Akhtar having caused damage to it by running on the good length area. The pitch was expected to help the spinners.

The overnight batsmen Saeed Anwar (37) and Yousaf Youhana (3) opened the Pakistan inning at 67 for 1. Chaminda Vaas conceded one run in the first over. Muralitharan took charge of the other end and managed to extract the desired spin from the pitch. Chaminda Vaas lacking control over his run up bowled two no balls in second over. Surprisingly 26 no balls had been bowled in this match so far, an alarming figure. The two batsmen trying to get set, remained scoring singles and twos only. The first 4 of the morning came when Youhana drove Vaas to covers in the 5th over. Pakistan was 80 for 1.

Sri Lanka achieved first success of the morning when Youhana was caught by kaluwitharana behind the stumps off Vaas for 8 in the 37th over. Pakistan was 82 for 2. Youhana trying a lazy shot did not stretch fully exposing the outer edge. Inzmam Ul Haq took the crease. The pitch having lost its bounce, the ball was no coming on to the bat. The ball not rising as expected Inzmam played a half cocked shot and was dropped by Dilshan at cover point. Pakistan was 90 for 2. Saeed Anwar's 50 came in the 41st over when the batsman swept Muralitharan for a single. His half century had come in 136 balls, an awfully slow inning by his style of batting. Pakistan posted 100 of the inning in the 44th over when Inzmam drove Muralitharan to extra cover for a simmering 4. Coming down the pitch he again hit Murali to long off for a 4. Inzmam had scored a quick fired 17. His shot were applauded by the crowd.

The bearded old man carrying a big Pakistan flag and cheering the Pakistan team became a legends figure in matches held at Sharjah. Touring around to gain world fame through the lense of TV cameras, he joined the crowd amidst a thundering applause.

Wickerama Singhe replaced Vaas and bowled a steady over. Muralitharan, however, kept prompting the batsmen to step out of the crease but the batsmen avoided to get into the trap. In the 49th over Saeed drove Wickerama Singhe to covers for a sizzling 4, bringing Pakistan's score to 116 for 2. Having already lost two important wickets, the batsmen were not taking undue risks. They had planned to achieve the target with steady flow of runs. Pakistan was 118 for 2 in 50 overs.

PAKISTAN FACE DISASTER

The play resumed with Muralitharan keeping the batsmen under pressure. He met with success getting Younis khan caught (bat & pad) by Jayawardene for 8. Pakistan was at 154 for 4, not a very good position to dictate terms. The incident re-played by the television from different angles, repeatedly remained a subject of controversy for a long time. After touching the pad, the ball had just scraped the glove.

Shahid Afridi, another son of the soil came in to bat. Basically a fast scorer of runs, he started cautiously as against the wishes of his fans, who expected boundaries flowing from his bat at all times. Afridi holds the world record of scoring the fastest century in one day cricket (in 37 balls) in addition to a century in test cricket to his credit.

The crowd erupted with sensation when Inzamam was subjected to a loud appeal for run out, declined by the 3rd umpire. He was playing with a brilliant 35, with Pakistan's march to the target of 268 largely depending on him.

Bad luck struck Pakistan in the 75th over when Shahid Afridi, in an attempt to drive Vaas to covers was caught by Arnold for 4. Pakistan was 165 for 5. Abdur Razzaq having joined Inzamam was out, bat and pad, caught by Jayawardene off Muralitharan for a duck. Pakistan was 167 for 6. With most of the batsmen back to the pavillion Pakistan appeared down in the dumps. Inzamam with a solid inning of 37 was the only recognized batsman in the side, the rest being the tail enders with limited ability to hold the crease.

Pakistan still trailing by 100 runs and the pressure mounting with every ball, wicket-keeper Atiq Uz Zaman, playing his first test was at the crease.

To break the long spell of despair Inzamam beautifully drove Muralitharan to extra cover for a 4. Pakistan was 174 for 6. Not able to bear the pressure Atiq was caught by Kaluwitherana behind the stumps off Wickerama Singhe for 1, with Pakistan at 174 for 7. The wickets falling at regular intervals, Waqar Younis took the crease and gave an easy catch to Jayawardene off Muralitharan for 3. Arshad Khan was also out LBW to Murali for a zero in 2 balls. Pakistan was 177 for 9. Shoaib joined Inzamam who could be called unlucky for loosing partners one after the other. Had the batsmen at the other end not thrown away their wickets, Inzamam was quite capable of taking his side closer to the target.

Inzamam completed his 50 with sizzling four to mid-wicket off Wickerama Singhe . It was a prolific inning played under extra ordinary pressure. Shoaib also hit Wickerama Singhe to mid off for a scintilating four. This was followed by Inzamam hitting the bowler for an exciting six. Immediately after Shoaib gave a dolly catch to Atapattu at mid off and was out for 5. Pakistan was all out for 199 runs. Muralitharan was the hero with 4 wickets for 77 runs. Inzamam remained not out with 58.

SRI LANKA TAKES IMPRESSIVE LEAD IN THE 2ND INNINGS

Atapattu and Jayasuriya opened the inning against the bowling attack of Waqar Younis and Shoaib Akhtar. Pakistan facing a deficit of 69 runs needed to dismiss the Sri Lankas cheaply to come back into the game not an easy proposition.

Generating a fiery pace Shoaib Akhtar was flicked by Jayasuriya to the third man region, the shot turning into a six. In the next over, Pakistan met with first success, when skipper Jayasuriya was given out LBW to Waqar for 6. Sri Lanka lost the first wicket at 7 runs on the board. The first five overs yielded 11 runs.

In 6th over of the day Atapattu hit Shoaib for a straight four, the ball travelling in the air inches away from the bowler's stretched hand. In the next over Russel Arnold hooked Waqar for an exciting four, followed by another drive to mid wicket that yielded 3 more runs to him. Continuing with aggressive posture Arnold also hooked a short pitched delivery from Shoaib for 4. Sri Lanka was 27 for 1 in 10 overs.

Aware of the dangers of evening session and the fiery attack of Pakistani bowlers, the Sri Lankans remained on the defensive, playing strokes only on loose balls. In the 14th over, Atapattu drove Arshad khan for four, while Arnold drove him to extra cover for a 4 in the next over. Sri Lanka was 41 for1. The visitors crossed 50 of the inning in the 20th over, when Arnold drove Arshad Khan to the covers for a four, taking his individual score to 30. Arshad was continuing to receive punishment at the hands of the two batsmen. In the 24th over Atapattu hit Arshad for two consecutive fours one at mid on and the other through the covers. Arshad eventually struck when Atapattu miss hit him giving an easy catch to Aamer Sohail at short mid wicket. He had played an attractive inning of 29. Sri Lanka was 69 for2.

Jayawardene came in to bat. Abdur Razzaq having replaced Shoaib Akhtar was punished with a bullet like shot straight to the boundary by Rusel Arnold. Skipper Saeed Anwar and Waqar Younis chasing the ball at full speed could not stop it. Arnold was playing at 36 with Sri Lanka at 86 for 2 in 30 overs.

As the Sri Lankans appeared defiant in their approach, the Pakistan captain resorted to quick bowling changes. Waqar came in and was pulled to square leg for a 4 by Jayawardene. Immediately after Waqar got him LBW on a delivery that kept low. Sri Lanka having received a serious blow was 90 for 3. Dilshan joined Arnold at the crease.

With Sri Lanka having lost three top batsmen and the Pakistani bowlers striking with impurity. The game was reaching an interesting stage. Pakistan still needed some quick wickets.

Russel Arnold with 46 runs was playing the sheet anchor for Sri Lanka that Cross 100 of the innings in 35 overs. Dilshan who was trying to dig in at the other end, snicked a short pitch ball from Shoaib to the third man region for a 4. He was, however, caught by Atiq-uz-Zaman behind the stumps off Aamer Sohail for 7. Sri Lanka was 108 for 4. Romesh Kaluwitharana came to bat. Arnold completed his well-deserved 50 by taking a single off Shoaib. On the very next ball Kaluwitharana was declared lbw off Shoaib before opening his account. Sri Lanka was 109 for 5.

Aravinda De Silva took the crease. Arnold drove Shoaib to covers for a 4. Shoaib had tried a fast yorker to brow beat him but received the punishment instead. In the next over, he was hit through the slips for a 4 by Arnold. Another 4 was added to the total when De Silva hit Arshad Khan to mid wicket. Sri Lanka became 129 for 5. When the play was stopped 3 overs earlier on account of fading light.

Sri Lanka has a lead of 198 runs over Pakistan with 5 wickets in hands. Russel Arnold is well dug in with a defiant 63, while De Silva playing at 7. Both of them being the recognized batsmen are quite capable of raising the lead to the level of invincibility. Pakistan's depleted bowling arsenal will have to put in gigantic efforts to restrict the Sri Lankans.

Pakistan's first inning score of 199 was just hopeless. Its batsmen will have to hold the crease with full confidence and determination curbing the tendency of playing flashy strokes and throwing away wickets

Day4: The Target of 294 - A Challenge for Pakistan

The play started with Sri Lanka enjoying the clean advantage of a 198 runs lead plus five wickets in hand. Having raised his team to such a position of strength, Russel Arnold was still batting at 63. Aravinda De Silva, his partner at the other end was also a batsman of outstanding merit. They were quite capable of holding the inning to any level and a posting good total for Pakistan to face.

The play started with the two umpires taking post, among the Nazir Junior celebrating his 54th Birthday. He received messages of congratulations from all around.

Having pulled a thigh muscle. De Silva came in to bat with a runner. The pitch being docile was not helping the batsmen. Commencing at the overnight score of 129 for 5, Russel Arnold and Aravinda De Silva played with immense confidence raising the score to 188. After playing a fine inning of 31, Aravinda was out. This was an excellent break for Pakistan but Russel Arnold acting as the sheet anchor for his side was still at the crease with 93, golden runs. Bad luck struck Arnold, when Arshad Khan came to bowl again. Surprisingly Arnold looking nervous against him got out at 99. Having played a gallant inning he some how fell into the off spinner's trap. Chaminda Vaas was the next man to go. Sri Lanka was now 206 for 8. With Pushpakumara and Wickramasinghe going down on after the other. Sri Lanka was all out for 224 runs.

A GIGANTIC TASK FOR PAKISTAN.

Sri Lanka having taken a lead of 293 runs, winning the match was a big challenge for Pakistan. Though Pakistan team had the capability, its batting line had lost the ability to dig in and bat with restraint. Its trail was also pretty fragile.

Pakistan opened with Saeed Anwar and Shahid Afridi, a matinee idol of the people of the Frontier Province. He was basically a prolific one day batsman. Opening the inning in a test was a trial of his nerves. Pakistan had a day and a half to achieve the target and should have thus played a steady game. They started with requisite confidence but lost Shahid Afridi at 59. Saeed Anwar being the main stay of the inning they raised the total to 77 when Inzamam was out for 9. With his departure, Pakistan had lost a match winnerAamer Sohail and Younis Khan having gone out cheaply Pakistan was 103 for 4.

Although Sri Lanka was keeping Pakistan under pressure the batsmen were keeping the score hoard moving. The 5th wicket fell at 145 when Razz was out for 6. Except for Yousuf Youhana when held the crease with full determination, the other batsmen fizzled out quick, Young Atiq-uz-Zaman kept his company, playing some very enterprising cricket.

They had almost swung the match to Pakistan's favour. Pakistan had piled up a very good score of 200 runs with Yousuf Youhana (77) still at the crease, playing a gallant inning. Atiq also contributed 25 runs was out at 208.

Saeed Anwar who had left the field after a small injury returned to the crease to provide confidence to his team. Pakistan almost had the victory in sight when the big tragedy occurred. Youhana was out after playing a heroic inning of 88 runs. Waqar Younis came and was out first ball, leaving Muralitharan at hat trick. Pakistan was 222 for 8. Having taken 4 wickets for 71, Muralitharan was again the hero of the 4th day.

Pakistan lost the initiative that it got in the midstream. It trails behind by 72 runs, with Saeed Anwar, the only batsman to survive such a pressure, it is a gigantic task for Pakistan. His performance with depends on how good a stand the left over tail enders can provide him.

Day 4 session reports are appended below:-

SRI LANKA GIVES A CHALLENGING TARGET TO PAKISTAN

Sri Lanka starts the game with a lead of 198 runs and 5 wickets in hand. Russel Arnold (63) and Arvinda De Silva (7) holding the crease were both accomplished batsmen. Sri Lanka was in an advantageous position. How efficiently and how accurately the Pakistan bowler could bowl during the day was the key note. It would indicate the total that Pakistan shall have to face. The Sri Lankan captain having opted for the heavy roller, the pitch did not seem to have undergone any change in its character.

The first over bowled by Shoaib Akhtar, though steady in nature still conceded 5 runs, Sri Lanka being now 134 for 5. In his first over Waqar Younis was driven to covers by Arnold for the first boundary of the day, taking his individual score to 67. De Silva was batting with 8 at the other end. Having pulled a thigh muscle he took the crease with a runner. Sri Lanka added 18 runs in the first 5 overs of the day and was 147 for 5 after completion of 48 overs of its 2nd inning. The pitch being docile was not helping the speedsters.

The speed merchants having created no impact on the Sri Lankan batsmen, off spinner Arshad Khan was called in. 150 of the Sri Lankan inning came in 50 overs, a clean average of 3 runs per over. On a loose delivery of Arshad, Arnold pulled him high for 3, the ball falling in between the two fielders. Playing against the spin on the next ball Arnold dragged him to square leg, but this time for a 4. In the next over by Waqar Younis, De Silva playing a flying shot in the cover point region survived a possible chance when Shahid Afridi failed to make up the ground. Sri Lanka was 170 for 5 in 56 overs, Arnold (84) and De Silva (20) holding the crease.

Abdur Razzaq replaced Waqar Younis, who had bowled a spell that was economical but did not endanger the two batsmen. Arshad bowling from the other end was smashed for a 4 to deep mid on by Arnold. De Silva also hit Razzaq for a similar shot to the mid on boundary in the next over.

Aamer Sohail replaced Arshad Khan in the 60th over. With his easy paced left arm deliveries Aamer had to his credit the dislodging of many partnerships. The side thus expected him to create the miracle.

In the next over De Silva comfortably hooked Razzaq for the four. True to his reputation Aamer struck in the next over when Arvinda De Silva trying to cut him gave the catch to Waqar De Silva played a fine inning of 31 in 70 balls. Sri Lanka was 188 for 6. Chaminda Vaas came to bat.

Though Pakistan got in excellent break, Russel Arnold (93) holding the other end with immense confidence and fully determined to hoist a well deserved century, remained a big hurdle. The suspense was growing. It grew further when Arnold smashed Aamer high to mid wicket for a sparkling six reaching 99.

Sri Lanka was now 201 for 6. Bad luck struck Arnold when Arshad Khan was called into bowl. Surprisingly after scoring a masterly 99, Arnold was pretty nervous while facing Arshad. Playing amidst a ring formed by close in fielders, he was absolutely shaky, not tackling with confidence, the first three balls that he played. On the fourth ball he gave an easy catch to Youhana at silly point. After playing such a brilliant inning of 99, it was a real tragedy for Arnold. Arshad struck again when he dismissed Chaminda Vaas, caught by Youhana for 5. Sri Lanka was now 206 for 8. Wickrama Singhe came in and banged Arshad for a straight 4.

Second sixer of the day came when Pushpakumara hit Arshad over the fence to mid wicket. Waqar Younis came in to bowl. He again hit Waqar to cover for a 4, but gave a catch to wicket-keeper Atiq-uz-Zaman on his next bowl. Sri Lanka was now 220 for 9.

Murlaitharan took the crease, hitting Waqar straight for 2 runs. In the next over Wickrama Singhe gave an easy catch to Younis Khan at cover off Shoaib Akhtar, Sri Lanka was all out for 224 runs.

Sri Lanka has taken a lead of 293 runs which can be called a challenge for Pakistan, considering their performance in the first inning. Pakistan team is quite capable of scoring 294 to win the match but of late, the team has lost its ground holding power. So let us keep our fingers crossed.

PAKISTAN FACES A BIG TARGET

Pakistan opened the 2nd inning with Saeed Anwar and Shahid Afridi, a dashing batsman from the Frontier Province, well known for his aggressive batsmanship. An ideal player for one day cricket, he had scored a century in test cricket also. The circumstances demeaned Pakistan to play a steady inning. They had ample time at their disposal to reach the target without involving in adventuresome of any sort.

The opening pair commenced steady but the score board had to move. In the third over Saeed Anwar hits Chaminda Vaas to Square leg for a four. The second four of the inning came in the next over when Afridi hooked Pushpakumara to the boundary. Pakistan was 22 without loss in 5 overs. Realizing the Herculean task that they faced, the batsmen resorted to defence, perhaps waiting for the loose deliveries. In the 8th over, however, Sri Lanka missed a golden chance, when Saeed Anwar snicked a dangerous delivery from Pushpakumara to slips where Jayawardene fumbled to snap the catch. Vaas

An other four was added to the total when Afridi drove Vaas straight to mid on for a beautiful boundary. Pakistan's scored 32 runs in 10 overs. Wickrema Singhe came in to bowl to Shahid Afridi. The score was only building up steadily when Shahid Afridi not been able to resist the temptation hooked Pushpakumara for a towering 6. He received a thunder of applause from his home crowd. It took Afrdi to 22 and Pakistan to 44 for no loss. In 14 overs, still 250 runs away from the target.

Pakistan completed his 50 in the 18th over when Shahid Afridi hit another six over mid on boundary to Muralitharan, raising his individual score to 30. To watch the Pakistan's second inning, specially Shahid Afridi in action, the crowd kept building up gradually. In the next over Saeed Anwar flected Wickrama Singhe to fine leg for a four. On the next ball there was a loud lbw appeal against him, turned down by umpire Nazir Junior.

Sri Lanka met with its first success when Muralitharan bowling very wisely, tempted Shahid Afridi down the pitch, who missed the ball and was smartly stumped by Kaluwitharana for a well played 31 runs. Pakistan was 59 for 1.

Inzamam ul Haq took the crease. A dashing batsman, he was quite capable of taking his side out of the crises by repeating his first inning performance. Pakistan depended on him a lot. Mutiah Muralitharan, a top off spinner in the game was keeping the Pakistani batsmen in check with his deceptive bowling. Inzamam opened his account by hitting Muralitharan for a splendid six to deep mid on. In 25 overs, Pakistan was 72 for 1 with Saeed Anwar (25) and Inzamam (6) on the crease. Muralitharan was bowling with a trap around the batsmen. He succeeded in his scheme by getting the prized wicket of Inzamam who gave an easy catch to Jayawardene for 9. Pakistan was 77 for 2. With two of its best wickets down, the pressure mounted on Pakistan.

Aamer Sohail who took the crease was expected to stem the rot. He also became the victim of a bat and pad catch, held by Dilshan of Muralitharan without opening his account. Pakistan 82 for 3, at tea time, was now in a hopeless situation.

Muralitharan spins Pakistan towards defeat

The session started with Yousuf Youhana taking the crease after the fall of Aamer Sohail. Pakistan was 82 for 3 with Saeed Anwar (28) holding the fort with full confidence.

In the 32nd over Saeed Anwar, not controlling his momentum after taking a sneaky single, struck with umpire Nazir Junior with full force. Both had side rolls. While the umpire stood up, hale and hearty, Saeed got hurt and left the field for treatment.

Younis Khan came in and opened his account with a very risky single. Had the throw-in hit the stumps, Youhana would have been run out. While Muralitharan was spinning the ball too much, the two youngsters, Youhana and Younis were trying to counter his spin by attempting dangerous shots. They appeared lacking maturity in facing the master spinner.

Having gained a little confidence, Youhana drove Vaas to cover for a dashing 4. He took a risky single again almost colliding with umpire Hampshire. Continuing with his irresponsible game Younis Khan was caught by Arnold off Vaas at gully for 6. Pakistan was 103 for 4. Continuing with his dangerous display of guile Muralitharan was tempting the players to make mistakes. They were, however, facing the other bowlers well.

In the 37th over Youhana drove Vaas for a beautiful 4. In the next over he hit Muralitharan for a straight six. The situation did not demand such a violent nature of stroke play. Not realizing Youhana continued with his aggressive posture. In the next over, he again drove Vaas to mid off for a scintillating four taking his individual score to 31. In the 45th over Chaminda Vaas was warned by umpire Hampshire for running on the pitch Pakistan was 131 for 4 with Youhana (31) and Razzaq (2) holding the crease.

Jayasuriya came in to bowl and was hit for a straight six by Yousuf Youhana. In the next over Muralitharan struck again when Razzaq was declared LBW for 6. Pakistan was 145 for 5.

Yousuf Youhana hit Jayasuriya for a 6 and a four to hoist his 50 in the 52nd over. Pakistan was 156 for 5.

Young Atiq-uz-Zaman who had come in at the fall of the last wicket opened his account by hitting Muralitharan to deep mid off. In Jayasuriya's next over Yousuf Youhana hit him for two more straight shots to the boundary. Continuing with strokes-play in one day style, Youhana was profusely cheered by the crowd. In the next over Youhana came down the pitch to smack a Muralitharan delivery for a big hit and was dropped by Pushpakumara at mid on. Muralitharan was quite vocal in displaying his disguise.

The atmosphere was shrouded in suspense when Atiq snicked Wickrama Singhe, Wicket-keeper Kaluwitharana picking up the ball from the ground and claiming the catch. Umpire Nazir Junior refered the decision to third umpire who declared the batsman "not out". The ball had touched the ground. The badly under pressure Pakistan team got some relief.

In the 58th over Youhana smashed Wickrama Singhe to mid off boundary for a quick-fire four. The chances that the two batsmen availed and the courage shown by them strengthened Pakistan's resolve to continue fighting for the target.

Pakistan completed 200 of the inning in 62nd over with Youhana (77) and Atiq (22). With 206 for 5, Pakistan needs 88 runs to win the match. Pakistan was certainly back in the game with pressure mounting on Sri Lanka. Muralitharan's venom also appeared to have been nutralized to some extent. After playing an aggressive inning of 25 Atiq was bowled by Vaas. Pakistan was 208 for 6.

Saeed Anwar returned to the crease accompnied by Shahid Afridi to act as "runner". The game having taken a dramatic turned was more in Pakistan's grip.

To strengthen the players, confidence and determination to win, it was a good move on the the part of skipper Saeed Anwar to come in to face last overs of the day and encounter the fading light, rather than leaving the difficult task to a tail-ender.

In the 69th over a big tragedy struck Pakistan when Youhana playing a sharply coming in delivery from Muralitharan was declared LBW after playing a galant inning of 88 runs.Waqar Younis came in and was out bat and pad catch at very first ball. Pakistan was 222 for 8 with Saeed Anwar batting at 32. Having taken 4 wickets for 71 runs, Muralitharan turned to be the hero again.

The Sri Lankan having turned the tables in their favour, Pakistan is in a precarious situation. It is 72 runs away from the target, with Saeed Anwar being the only batsman worth the name.

Day5: MURALITHARAN ROUTS PAKISTAN

Saeed Anwar and Arshad Khan opened the Pakistan's dwindling inning with the overnight score of 222 for 8. Saeed Anwar with 32 runs to his credit was the only hope for Pakistan, the others not capable of holding their own in such a precarious condition.

A miracle could only save Pakistan for which atleast staying at the wicket was essential. The batsmen, however, showed different designs. They came out to bat with the intention of hitting out, meaning they were not sure of their ability to achieve the target Saeed Anwar threw away his wicket, hitting a flying shot and caught by Wickeramasinghe at mid-on for 36. Pakistan was 226 for 9 with no hopes of a survival. In the next over Arshad Khan was also caught by Jayawardene of Muralitharan for 5. Pakistan was thus bundled out for 236, suffering a defeat by 57 runs. Mutiah Muralitharan was declared "Man of the Match" for his magnificent haul of 10 wickets.

A part from Pakistan's inability to hold the ground, Muralitharan was the main wrecker of the Pakistan team. He made use of the turning wicket to his best advantage. He mesmerised the batsmen to such an extent that none other than Yousaf Youhana faced him with confidence. Having not been able to adjust their style of batting with the situation, the defeat was mainly of Pakistan's own making. While the conditions required the batsmen to dig in and hold the crease, they persisted with flashy strokes, thus throwing away the wickets. With a heroic knock of 88 Yousaf Youhana had taken the team to winning position but the remaining batsmen failed to capitalize on the precious gain.

The 3rd and final test starts at Karachi on 12 March.
