Symonds slams India
Anand Vasu - 23 August 1999

India won the toss and elected to bat on a Galle wicket that looked like it might assist the spinners later in the day. Unfortunately for Tendulkar, things did not quite go according to plan. Gillespie bowling with fire kept the Indians absolutely quiet. The first wicket to fall was Saurav Ganguly's, with the score at 25. Ganguly was trapped plumb in front by Gillespie. Tendulkar was kept quiet for a long time by the Australian opening bowlers. When he finally tried to cut loose, Tendulkar miscued a pull of Tom Moody and gave Lehmann an easy catch. Dravid didn't last very long and tickled a Symonds delivery to wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist. At this point the score was 38/3 of 14.2 overs. Khurasiya livened up the proceedings with a couple of quick boundaries, but even he didn't last very long and patted a fulltoss straight back to Moody. Robin Singh and Jadeja then steadied the Indian innings a bit, pushing the score on to 92, when Jadeja holed out to long-on, trying to accelerate the scoring. MSK Prasad began confidently but was completely undone by a Shane Warne flipper. Robin Singh then played in standard fashion and flat-batted Warne for six over mid-wicket. With rain coming down, the innings was shortened to 38 overs. Robin Singh departed with the score on 139. Last ditch efforts by Chopra saw India reach 151 off their allotted 38 overs.

When Australia came out to bat they were chasing 159 for victory. India's 151 was adjusted to 158 by the Duckworth-Lewis rule. A score of 159 did not look like it was going to test the Australians, who had great depth in batting. Tom Moody, who was so successful during the World Cup was slated to come in at number eight. As it happened, Australia barely required their fourth batsman to come out. Mark Waugh and Gilchrist started off steadily, scoring at runs an over. Venkatesh Prasad got one ball to climb sharply and had Mark Waugh caught behind. In a move that surprised a few people, Steve Waugh sent in Symonds at the fall of Mark Waugh's wicket. Symonds used the opportunity afforded to him to best advantage and thrashed the bowling around. Symonds was especially severe on anything short and pulled the ball fiercely. At the end of 20 overs Australia were 118/1. By this time, the match was well out of India's hands. Symonds brought up his fifty off just 47 balls. Just when it looked like Australia would cruise home to victory with 9 wickets in hand, Gilchrist mis-hit a drive and lobbed a catch to Dravid off the bowling of Ganguly. Gilchrist had made 68. In 29.1 overs, Australia overhauled India's score. Symonds was not out on 67 and was deservedly adjudged the man of the match.
