England have won their first 5-match series for 12 years after a 23 run victory in the final Test.

At 11.28 on Monday morning the final South African wicket fell and supporters rushed onto the pitch at Headingley to celebrate the victory and the conclusion of a truly nail-biting Test match.

Mark Butcher was announced as Man of the Match for his innings for 116. The player of the series for England is Michael Atherton and for South Africa, Allan Donald.

England's selectors have also announced a 37 man squad for the Triangular Tournament and the World Cup.

England won the 4th Test and levelled the series 1-1 after an 8-wicket victory at Trent Bridge on Monday. Alec Stewart made 45 from just 34 balls as the home side reached the 247 set for victory with half a day to spare.

After the 3rd Test, Alec Stewart was appointed as captain England for one-day matches as well.

England survived the final day of the 3rd Test at Old Trafford - the scores level with just one second innings wicket remaining. Alec Stewart's 164, Mike Atherton's 89 and a crucial unbeaten 37 from Robert Croft all helped to keep the series alive.

South Africa won the 2nd Test at Lord's by 10 wickets, Jonty Rhodes awarded Man of the Match for his 100 and fielding.

The First Test ended in a draw after rain ruined what could have been an exciting final day. Dominic Cork made a fine return to the England team, taking five wickets in South Africa's first innings, however Darren Gough was injured in his comeback without bowling a ball, being struck on the hand by Allan Donald.

South Africa have already won the Texaco Trophy: they beat England in the first 2 matches by 3 wickets at The Oval, and by 32 runs at Old Trafford, England won the 3rd match by 7 wickets at Headingley with 15 overs to spare, Darren Gough and Jonty Rhodes were the men of the series.
