South Africa dispose of WIndies in 'Kallis' manner
AFP - 7 February 1999

CENTURION, South Africa, Feb 7 (AFP) - Outstanding South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis inspired his side to another crushing defeat of the West Indies here on Sunday in the seventh and final one-day international.

Kallis hit 66 out of a total of 226-8 off the South Africans allotted 50 overs and took 3-38 as the visitors crumbled to 176 all out off 44.5 overs to give the hosts a 6-1 win in the series to add to their 5-0 whitewash in the test series.

Kallis came to the rescue after the West Indians, who welcomed back captain Brian Lara after he missed two matches with a chipped bone in his elbow, had reduced the hosts to 61-4, Reon King and Nixon McLean taking two wickets apiece, the latter taking the prize one of captain Hansie Cronje for just 11.

However, Kallis and the feisty Jonty Rhodes put on a fifth wicket partnership of 99 and some lusty bighitting from tailenders Shaun Pollock, Lance Klusener, who was named man of the series after taking 11 wickets in the series at an average of 19.2, and veteran spinner Pat Symcox saw the South Africans make a defendable total.

The West Indian batsmen failed once again to make any impression apart from makeshift West Indies opening batsman Junior Murray, who hit a defiant 57 to keep the West Indies in touch but it was eventually to no avail as Murray was alone among the tourists' top order to reach double figures.

Murray batted for 108 minutes and struck six boundaries, but the only other resistance came from the tail-enders like Floyd Reifer (22), Keith Semple (23) and Nixon McLean (23).

Otherwise, as it has been for most of the series, it was basically all one-way traffic from the moment Jacques Kallis dismissed the tourists' mainstay, Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the second over of the innings.

Kallis also had Carl Hooper caught behind for 8, and also sent Windies captain Brian Lara and Keith Arthurton packing.
