South Africa clinch series
AFP - 2 February 1999

CAPE TOWN, Feb 2 (AFP) - Allrounder Lance Klusener and inexperienced batsman Dale Benkenstein led South Africa to a series-clinching 89-run win in the fifth limited overs international against the West Indies at Newlands Tuesday.

Klusener hammered an unbeaten 54 off 36 balls and then dismissed the two leading West Indian batsmen, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Carl Hooper. Benkenstein made a crucial 69 as South Africa recovered from 68 for six and made 221 for eight off their 50 overs.

West Indies crumbled to 132 all out, with skipper Hansie Cronje taking three for 10 in nine overs with his medium-pacers.

The victory was Cronje's 76th in 100 limited overs internationals as captain. He is the sixth player in one-day international cricket to have led his country 100 times but none of the others has achieved a comparable success rate.

A convincing victory had seemed unlikely earlier when South Africa's top order batting crashed against aggressive fast bowling and lively fielding.

Benkenstein, 24, playing in his sixth limited overs international, stayed calm and batted cautiously, hitting only two boundaries as he notched his first international half-century. He shared partnerships of 62 for the seventh wicket with Mark Boucher (34) and 91 for the eighth wicket with Klusener before being run out off the last ball of South Africa's innings.

Klusener clubbed three sixes and two fours, with two of his sixes sailing over long-off against fast bowler Reon King, who conceded 23 off his last eight deliveries after his first 7.4 overs yielded only 16 runs on a slow pitch of uneven bounce.

West Indies, again led by Carl Hooper because of an injury to Brian Lara's right forearm, seemed on course for the win they needed a win to stay in with a chance of winning the series. Nixon McLean took three wickets in his opening spell of eight overs, while King and Curtly Ambrose provided accurate and lively support.

Medium-pacer Keith Semple, who had not bowled in the three previous matches, took two for 35.

Once again, however, the depth of the South African batting proved an important factor as Benkenstein and Boucher stabilised the innings before Klusener's assault took the home team to a total which was always likely to be enough on a pitch which historically has favoured the bowlers under floodlights in the second innings.

Left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul made an aggressive start, hitting Shaun Pollock for four and three off the second and third balls of the West Indian innings.

The bowlers quickly settled down, however, and kept the West Indian batsmen under pressure, leading to rash strokes as they tried to keep the score moving.

With two matches to play, South Africa lead the series 4-1. Their one-day success follows a 5-0 clean sweep in the Test series earlier in the season.
