Ball-by-Ball Commentary

welcome to Carisbrook in Dunedin for the opening One-Day
International in the Bank of New Zealand Series between New
        Zealand and South Africa
Dion Nash has won the toss and has sent South Africa in to bat,
Simon Doull is 12th man for NZ, Nicky Boje for RSA
Matthew Bell has come into the New Zealand side as a late
replacement for Roger Twose, who suffered a back strain and failed
        a fitness test earlier today
Geoff Allott gets the strike bowler's berth ahead of Doull
the weather is excellent now, clearing up and getting sunnier all
the time after overcast conditions hovered about this morning
the crowd is so-so, should build up later, perhaps 40% full now
the teams have just come out for the national anthems, and promptly
        departed into the tunnel again
the umpires Doug Cowie and Steve Dunne walk out to the centre
third umpire today is Chris King
and out come the Black Caps
two of which are wearing teal hats, one a white floppy, but you
        can't be fussy
Kirsten and Gibbs enter the arena, in South African kit from their
        home series against the Windies
Geoff Allott is to open the bowling, Kirsten to face
0.1 Allott to Kirsten, no run, leaning forward pushed out to cover
        point
Allott has two slips, point, cover point, mid off, mid on, square
leg, fine leg and third man
0.2 Allott to Kirsten, no run, defensive back to the bowler, Allott
takes the 'catch' and the crowd give a muted cheer
0.3 Allott to Kirsten, one run, first runs of the match, strays down
the leg side and clipped down to long leg where Horne fields
0.4 Allott to Gibbs, no run, back and defensive to Nash at mid on
0.5 Allott to Gibbs, FOUR, short, lays back into it and pushed between
point and cover, they can only stand and watch it smack into the
        fence
too short from Allott, easy with these short square boundaries
0.6 Allott to Gibbs, no run, leaves outside off stump

the captain to bowl himself at the other end, heck knows what it's
called, the 'sightscreen' end? hmm perhaps not
gathers a bit of advice from the old postman, Gavin Larsen at mid
        on

1.1 Nash to Kirsten, one run, well played, just leaned forward pushing
towards mid off gently, ran with the shot and nobody could do
anything about it in the field
1.2 Nash to Gibbs, no run, back and defended to cover, McMillan across
quickly from point to dive and field
1.3 Nash to Gibbs, no run, back, defends to Horne at mid on
1.4 Nash to Gibbs, no run, back and pushed to McMillan towards cover
        again
1.5 Nash to Gibbs, no run, off the legs to square leg
1.6 Nash to Gibbs, no run, tucked off the hip but good save by Bell at
        square leg

End of over 2 (1 run) South Africa 6/0 (RR: 3.00)

the 'Festival of Speed' goes on in the background, some surrounding
streets right next to the ground have been cut off for motor
racing, a rather loud din shall hang around for a couple more
        hours yet

2.1 Allott to Kirsten, no run, off the pad to backward square
the motor racers didn't have any regard for the South African
national anthem either, sounding at its loudest during it
2.2 Allott to Kirsten, no run, defends on the on side
2.3 Allott to Kirsten, no run, full, squirts it out to point
2.4 Allott to Kirsten, no run, good length again, pushed to Vettori at
        cover point
2.5 Allott to Kirsten, no run, dead full again, Kirsten cramps it out
from the bottom of the bat back down the track to Allott
2.6 Allott to Kirsten, no run, stretches well forward in the crease,
struck on the pad and Allott is alone in a huge appeal to umpire
        Cowie, but he remains unmoved

End of over 3 (0 runs) South Africa 6/0 (RR: 2.00)
GI Allott 2-1-5-0
G Kirsten 2* (10b) HH Gibbs 4* (8b 1x4)

3.1 Nash to Gibbs, one run, back and pushed up towards mid on, precise
judgement of the run between the pair and it's easy peasy, though
Horne impresses with a backhand throw that hits the stumps at the
        bowler's end, well safe
3.2 Nash to Kirsten, one run, turned down to Allott at fine leg
3.3 Nash to Gibbs, no run, back and defending back up to the bowler
umpire Dunne moseys on over to the point where Nash is landing his
second stride on the pitch, 'watch it sonny'
3.4 Nash to Gibbs, one run, played to wide mid on
3.5 Nash to Kirsten, no run, advances down the wicket trying to break
up Nash's length, but he's spotted a mile off and Nash adjusts,
forced to defend back to the bowler and bid a hasty retreat
3.6 Nash to Kirsten, no run, well forward again, pings off the pad up
        to mid off

End of over 4 (3 runs) South Africa 9/0 (RR: 2.25)
*DJ Nash 2-0-4-0
G Kirsten 3* (13b) HH Gibbs 6* (11b 1x4)

4.1 Allott to Gibbs, no run, defends to McMillan roaming in the covers
4.2 Allott to Gibbs, no run, forcefully driven to Cairns at mid off
4.3 Allott to Gibbs, no run, drags it in shorter, Gibbs quickly on to
the back foot pulling hard, but well stopped by Nash at mid on,
granted it was straight to him
4.4 Allott to Gibbs, no run, struck on the pad with a bit of late swing
in, going down leg and Gibbs gestures he got a fair bit of willow
        edge on that
4.5 Allott to Gibbs, no run, sweetly struck up to Cairns at extra cover
4.6 Allott to Gibbs, one run, leans on it, pushing into the covers,
        another well calculated single taken

End of over 5 (1 run) South Africa 10/0 (RR: 2.00)
GI Allott 3-1-6-0
G Kirsten 3* (13b) HH Gibbs 7* (17b 1x4)

5.1 Nash to Gibbs, no run, good lengt, defends firmly up to Horne
coming in across from mid on
5.2 Nash to Gibbs, no run, much shorter, back and defends up the track
        on the off side
5.3 Nash to Gibbs, no run, beaten! first genuine one of the day,
angling back into him then holding its line, he was forced to do
something with the bat, vertical blade just misses the edge on the
        back foot
5.4 Nash to Gibbs, one run, tucked into the off side, another of those
well-judged singles, which we're bound to see with monotony before
        the afternoon is out
5.5 Nash to Kirsten, no run, shorter, pushed down to Bell at square leg
5.6 Nash to Kirsten, no run, defended up to Horne at mid off

New Zealand have kept this pair under wraps well so far (touch
wood), Gibbs and Kirsten looking aggressive and running between
        the wickets well though

6.1 Allott to Gibbs, FOUR, that wood wasn't touched long enough I
suspect, superb wristy flick to a shorter ball, timed swetly and
long leg struggled around the boundary to no avail
6.2 Allott to Gibbs, no run, follows it up with a more agricultural
looking shot, tried to cross-bat one into the on side, but it was
too full outside off, into the covers
6.3 Allott to Gibbs, no run, back and defends out to Harris at cover
        point
McMillan has moved into a short cover for Gibbs
6.4 Allott to Gibbs, FOUR, too short, good night ma'am, pulled forward
of square leg in the air, but quite safe, Bell's feet remained
planted as he just watched it sail past, too easy
6.5 Allott to Gibbs, no run, tries to open the shoulders and smack one
through the covers, a bit full and mistimed out to Harris
6.6 Allott to Gibbs, OUT: one slog too many, he really didn't need to
        do that, *really*

shocking wide ball a mile outside off stump and going wider, big
        swipe and dragged it on
pretty impressive feat to get bowled to one that wide
Jacques Kallis is the number three
he'll be at the non-striker's end, that was the last ball of an
eventful over, 8 runs, 3 failed slogs and a wicket

7.1 Nash to Kirsten, no run, struck on the pad trying to clip it
        through the on side
squared around a bit as it came back
7.2 Nash to Kirsten, one run, down the leg side, picked up down to
Allott at third man who awkwardly fields it on the second bounce
7.3 Nash to Kallis, no run, back and defended to McMillan at cover
        point
7.4 Nash to Kallis, (noball) no run, turned to square leg, but he
        oversteps
7.4 Nash to Kallis, no run, back and across his stumps, pushed back
straight down the wicket and into the bowler's stumps
7.5 Nash to Kallis, FOUR, too short, too much opportunity, too easy,
hooked over square leg, couple of bounces and the inevitable
7.6 Nash to Kallis, two runs, streakier this time, inside edgey trying
to drive on the off side, goes behind square leg, Bell back in
chase, Cairns across from long leg and fires in the throw as they
take the sharp second, direct hit would've had him but not quite

8.2 Allott to Kirsten, FOUR, half volley, just picked up and over
square leg with no great effort
8.3 Allott to Kirsten, no run, off the pad dropping down behind square
in close on the leg side
8.4 Allott to Kirsten, no run, back and defended to McMillan at short
        cover
8.5 Allott to Kirsten, no run, back and defends to the bowler
8.6 Allott to Kirsten, no run, advances down the track, swing and miss,
struck on the pad, Allott goes up again but Cowie cares not

        covers
9.4 Nash to Kallis, no run, pushed to Horne at mid on
9.5 Nash to Kallis, no run, back trying to force it through square, a
bit full and can only get it to point
9.6 Nash to Kallis, no run, back and defends to the bowler who almost

        second
10.2 Allott to Kirsten, no run, cracked into the ground and out to
        Harris at cover point
10.3 Allott to Kirsten, no run, slash and miss outside off, Allott
despairs, it was a bit close on him though he tries to give
himself room by moving towards the leg side a little late
10.4 Allott to Kirsten, no run, back and defends to the bowler
10.5 Allott to Kirsten, wide: no run, slashes at a wide'un outside off,
doesn't managed to connect and drag it onto his stumps though
crowd "ooooh" as they thought he nearly got something on that, they
        should be so lucky ...
10.5 Allott to Kirsten, OUT: "spooky" is all I can say, Allott finds the
sticks again, Kirsten is frustrated and moves wide of leg stump to
try and flay it through the covers, misses by a mile, Alloot
        doesn't

Gavin Larsen replaces Nash at the bowling crease after a spell of

        went for a few moments
11.4 Larsen to Cronje, no run, back and defends to mid off
11.5 Larsen to Cronje, FOUR, lifted over the covers and it beats the

pushing up towards the bowler on the off side
13.2 Larsen to Cronje, FOUR, cross-bat swat, gets it around the corner
        just behind short fine leg
Cronje has fond memories of facing Larsen at WC96 where he
slaughtered him on the way to a 36-ball half century at Faisalabad

40.1 Klusener to Harris, no run, driven up to mid off
40.2 Klusener to Harris, two runs, lovely cover drive, and equally good

third umpire has a look to see if he touched the rope with ball in
        hand, but it was OK
40.3 Klusener to Harris, no run, cut to cover point, Astle set off
looking for a run, but had to quickly get back as the throw was
fired in, he was safe and the throw missed anyhow

44.2 Klusener to Harris, no run, well wide down the leg side, Klusener
up in a big appeal to stop Cowie contemplating signalling a wide
44.3 Klusener to Harris, SIX, pulled, skied it high and looked like he
had skied a catch, but narrow square boundaries and it just sneaks
over the fence, a vital blow that

and Kallis is into the attack again
conjecture that Kallis will bowl just the 1 over so that Pollock
and Donalnd can bowl their final two each from either end
but if Kallis makes a breakthrough ...

45.1 Kallis to Harris, bye: two runs, kept low, through Boucher's legs,
bad miss though the ball was quite dark and harder to see under
        the lights
45.2 Kallis to Harris, no run, short, cracked off the back foot up to
        mid off, Pollock
23 off 28 balls to win

        know-who at backward point
45.5 Kallis to Harris, one run, slashes outside off, thick outside edge
down to third man, travelling very fast
       22 needed off 25
45.6 Kallis to Nash, no run, back and defends to the bowler, great over
by Kallis, just 3 off it

        the other end
fine figures of 3-26 off 8 overs and troubled all batsmen
        throughout

46.1 Donald to Harris, no run, tight bowling, slower ball, pushed to
point, 22 off 23 balls required
46.2 Donald to Harris, one run, down the track slogging across the line,
straight to mid off, but is so far down the wicket it's an easier
        run
       21 off 22 ..
Donald back to bowling over the wicket to Nash
46.3 Donald to Nash, SIX, what *A* shot! a decisive moment perhaps? just
shuffled on his crease, standing out of it originally, and just
lifted him a mile down the ground
46.4 Donald to Nash, (noball) no run, Donald loses his cool and bowls a
        bouncer! costs them a run
that six was struck "as clean as a whistle", to briefly steal from
        Richie Benaud's library of cliches
46.4 Donald to Nash, one run, turned through square leg to the deep
now just 13 off 20 to win
46.5 Donald to Harris, no run, ooooooh, Harris struck it straight to
Gibbs at cover, Nash backed up a long way and a quick throw just
misses, Nash was gone by a country furlong had it hit
46.6 Donald to Harris, one run, pulled to deep square leg

New Zealand 200 is raised, in 209 mins, 285 balls
Kallis will continue from the far end, preferred ahead of Pollock,
fair call on bowling form tonight, Pollock was a bit off
third umpire for a run out, and that looks out by a couple of
        inches

47.1 Kallis to Harris, two runs, Harris pulled it through midwicket,
straight through Gibbs' hands and almost to the boundary, great
outfielding by Benkenstein who rain a long way around from deep
        midwicket
just pushed it back inside the boundary line, there was indecision
over the third run, both hesitated mid-pitch then Harris committed
to going to the bowler's end, and Nash was caught short by the
        great throw to Boucher

47.3 Kallis to Vettori, no run, hit up to mid off, Harris looked for the
run but Vettori sends him back wisely
       10 off 15 to win
47.4 Kallis to Vettori, one run, charges and gets a thick edge down to
third man on the bounce, great return through
       9 off 14 needed
47.5 Kallis to Harris, legbye: one run, tucked around the corner to
        vacant short fine leg
       8 needed off 13 balls
47.6 Kallis to Vettori, no run, almost bowled, tight ball, swing and
miss and it scoots through to Boucher along hte ground, he
underarms back at the stumps and Vettori bids a hasty retreat back
        into his crease

48.1 Donald to Harris, no run, super ball, short, fast and straight,
Harris jumped and fended trying to run it down to third man, no
        hope, great pressure bowling
       8 off 11 to win
chant goes up for "Harry! Harry!"
48.2 Donald to Harris, no run, defends to the middle of the pitch,
Vettori charged off for a run, had to scamper back, midwicket
raced in but only underarm flicked it up ove the stumps for nobody
        awaiting to take it
       8 off 10 needed ...
48.3 Donald to Harris, one run, dropped down forward of square leg
       7 off 9 required
48.4 Donald to Vettori, one run, chopped down to third man, cleverly
used the pace on the ball
       6 off 8 needed
48.5 Donald to Harris, bye: one run, through to the keeper, Vettori runs
through, Boucher underarms at the stumps and misses and they get
        through
Cowie gives a useless signal for a bye
48.6 Donald to Vettori, FOUR, 48.6 Donald to Vettori, FOUR, slices it

scores are level, New Zealand need 1 to win of the final over
that bye taken to the keeper was caught behind if that wasn't a
signal for a bye, he just half raised his hand to his head, but
        not above it

49.1 Kallis to Harris, FOUR, pulled over the inner circle to cow corner
and New Zealand win by 3 wickets with 5 balls to spare!
all the fielders were inside the circle, Harris stood back and
delivered and the locals go one-up in the 6-match series
Astle set the innings up and kept it going throughout the majority
of the chase, Bell propped up in support when things looked bleak,
and final cameos by Harris, Nash and Vettori seal a win that
looked rather shaky many times throughout the innings
(by the way, the official scorers noted down that strange call by
Cowie as a bye, son't don't feel aggrieved for mising out on a
        potential wicket :-)
       should have presentations coming shortly
Nathan Astle is the Man of the Match
thanks for following the game on CricInfo, the next match in the
