Watson rules over South Africa The Christchurch Press - 10 February 1999 Canterbury all-rounder Helen Watson, unlucky to miss selection in the New Zealand women's cricket team, showed her mettle against South Africa. Watson top-scored for New Zealand A with 46 against the visitors at Lincoln Green yesterday then took three for 21 off her 10 overs as South Africa fell for 123 - 72 runs short of New Zealand A's total. New Zealand A won the toss and lost its first four wickets for 52 before Watson, firstly with Kate Pulford, then with Sara McLauchlan, was associated in two useful partnerships. The South Africans did not help their cause by bowling an amazing 46 wides. South Africa was penalised two of its 50 overs when it started its chase. After a solid start, South Africa succumbed meekly. It was 56 for one, but lost its last nine wickets for 67. Watson claimed three of the first four batswomen including captain, Linda Olivier, caught and bowled first ball, and off-spinner Missy Moffat bowled tidily. New Zealand A fielded smartly, Palmerston North wicketkeeper Emily Travers standing up to the medium-pace bowlers and taking a smart catch.
