Lancashire v Western Province Academy
The Lancashire Evening Telegraph - 17-19 March 1999

Day 2: Lancashire crash in tour opener

Lancashire were on the edge of an embarrassing tour defeat in South Africa today.

With only two second innings wickets left they began the third and final day just 45 ahead of the Western Province Academy.

Lancashire, containing a mixture of experience and youth for their opening match of the two weeks trip, crashed to 110-8 with Warren Hegg and Richard Green at the crease.

Captain John Crawley made only 15, and the only batsman to make any impression was Graham Lloyd with 31.

However, there was some encouragement from the performance of seamer Darren Shadford who claimed 4-62 as WPA reached 270-9 dec in their first knock.

The Oldham youngster is fighting for a place in the championship attack at the start of the season, following Wasim Akram's departure and the World Cup selection of Ian Austin and Andy Flintoff.

Day 3: Lancs save the day in South Africa

Lancashire pulled off a sensational win over Western Province Academy to launch their South African tour in style.

Seamers Glen Chapple, Darren Shadford, and Richard Green linked up with leg spinner Chris Schofield to demolish the inexperienced WPA batsmen in just 36.5 overs, handing Lancashire a 27 runs win after tottering on the brink of an embarrassing defeat.

Shadford and Green shone with the bat and ball in Lancashire's 27 runs success at Constantia.

First they combined in Lancashire's best stand of the game, 53 runs for the last wicket, to haul them from114-9 to 167. Green claimed 25 and Shadford 27 not out. Then they bowled superbly as WPA, needing 103, collapsed to 75 all out.

Shadford and Earby-born Chapple did the early damage, ripping through the top order.

A fourth wicket stand held up Lancashire for a while, but Green took over with a trio of middle order victims, and Schofield wrapped it up with 3-5 from 35 balls.
