Manicaland v Denmark (Mutare Sports Club) Ole Mortensen - 16 March 1999 CricInfo report The fourth match of the tour is against a select team from Manicaland, played at the town of Mutare, which is about four hours drive from Harare, close to the Mozambique border. Denmark won the toss and decided to bat first on a pitch with a soft surface likely to take spin later in the day. The Danish innings never took off and after 30 overs there is only 78 runs on the board for the loss of five wickets! New batsman, Jan Overgaard, who came in at no. three is still there. He is a slow starter on any day, but today he was completely bogged down. He was probably thinking it was better being out in middle than in the pavilion with the rest of the gang. So he stayed and together with Mohammed Saddique who had his eye on the ball the size of a football, they got the run rate going and had a stand for the sixth wicket of 94 runs. The running was aggressive, perhaps too aggressive as Saddique ended in pulling a groin muscle. The total ended on 201 for nine with 54 to Saddique and 43 to Overgaard. Bajit Singh had to take over the gloves as M.Saddique had a groin strain and unable to keep wicket. Without ``Billy'' Khan in side the opening bowlers were Dennis Zachariasson and Th.Hansen. Th. Hansen struck early when Aftab took a close bat-pad catch when the score was 1. All the Danish seam bowlers were on fire and this kept the score down to 77-5 after 25 overs but out this runs were 23 extras, which is unacceptable on this level. Ex-Zimbabwe player John Brent, who came in as no. six, showed great authority and class top-scoring with 67. Thomas Hansen came back on and removed all excitement by bowling Brent and ending the Manicaland innings at 167. Taking 25-3, he was well supported by D.Zachariaason with 22-2 and M.Hedegaard 30-2. B.Singh did a good job behind the stumps.
