DCF XI V Club Cricket Conference XI (UK) (Queen Sports Club) Ole Mortensen - 18 March 1999 CricInfo report The fifth and unofficial match of tour was to be played at the Queens Sports Club at Bulawayo, which is Zimbabwe's second Test ground and having their 100 years jubilee in 1994. Unfortunately it had rained heavily during the night and the groundsman, Noel Peak, had to admit they did not adequate covers to secure the one end of the pitch. This meant that the end in question was a bit ``heavy'' and the match was delayed by two hours! Our opponent, Club Cricket Conference, is a select team from the London area in Britain and according to their tour brochure the organisation was founded back in 1919 and supposedly beat the Australians during their 1961 tour! As the match was delayed it was agreed to reduce it to 2 x 40 overs. D.C.F. XI won the toss and elected to bat first in the hope of the pitch drying out during the day. A new opening combination was chosen as Carsten and Bajit have not been that all successful, so Bajit and Peter Thomson opened the batting, a left/right-hand combination. On the whole the Danish batting was a dismal affair. Except for Peter Thompson and Morten Hedegaard, the rest batted like bags of potatoes. Everyone was forgetting the principle of getting over the ball, resulting in lofted shots and catches. The Danish coach Ole Mortensen has yet to see a batsman getting out playing the ball along the ground and in the gaps. Morten top-scored with 40 and Peter with 36 in a total of 173 runs in 40 overs. During the break it rained yet again forcing a reduced target of 147 runs in 30 overs for the C.C.C. XI. The outfield was now more difficult as it was more wet than in the morning. Amjad ``Billy'' Khan was back in the side and opened the bowling with Th.Hansen. C.C.C. are pressed from start and wereat a time 69 for 4. The spinner Søren Klitgaard had after three overs taken 13-2 when the C.C.C. umpire decided that he could not accept Klitgaards bowling action as being fair. Klitgaard had to be taken off. The Danish fielding in the match was poor, dropping five catches and the in final 16 overs a lack of concentration from the bowlers. This meant that C.C.C. passed the Danish total after 38.3 overs therefore winning the match by six wickets. C.C.C. was a team the Danes should not lose to, even on a bad day! The Danes must learn to be more clinical in holding their chances.
