The Electronic Telegraph India are inspired by Jadeja 103
Nelson Clare in Pune - 30 March 1999

An undefeated 103 at just over a run a ball from Ajay Jadeja spurred India to a 51-run win against Sri Lanka in Pune yesterday, knocking them out of the triangular tournament.

Jadeja, the stand-in captain for Mohammad Azharuddin, lost the toss, but inspired his side to a total of 286 for six in their 50 overs; Sri Lanka were dismissed for 235 in 45.5 overs.

India will face Pakistan in Sunday's final, though the two teams still have a qualifying match of academic value in Mohali tomorrow. Jadeja combined with debutant Amay Khurasia, who hit 57 from 45 deliveries, to add 124 runs in only 92 balls for the fourth wicket.

Any hopes Sri Lanka had of overhauling India were extinguished in the 31st over when Aravinda De Silva, who made 55, and the captain, Arjuna Ranatunga, were run out off successive balls. After that the result was not really in question despite some aggressive batting by the Sri Lankan tail-enders.

For the Mohali match, India have drafted in Vinod Kambli, wicketkeeper Saba Karim and seamers Venkatesh Prasad and Laxmi Ratan Shukla into the squad of 14.

Sachin Tendulkar, India's leading batsman, who withdrew from the tournament with back spasms, has made himself available for the Sharjah Cup triangular tournament on April 7-16.

England have strengthened their warm-up schedule for Sharjah in Lahore to include back-to-back day-night fixtures against Pakistan A, who are to be captained by Waqar Younis and could include Mushtaq Ahmed. The fixtures are as follows.

Tomorrow: Lahore Gymkhana, Saturday: Pakistan A, Sunday: Pakistan A.
