ADELAIDE, Australia, Jan 24 (AFP) - A five-wicket haul by firebrand
paceman Glenn McGrath spearheaded Australia to a crushing 80-run
victory over Sri Lanka in the triangular series one-day cricket clash
at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
Australia were all out for 270 from the last ball of their 50 overs
after being sent in. They then dismissed the world limited-overs
champions for 190 in 41.4 overs as McGrath grabbed a superb five
wickets for 40 runs.
McGrath finished with his best international one-day figures,
surpassing his previous mark of 5-52 against Pakistan at Lahore in
1994-95.
At one stage, McGrath had seized 5-19 off 40 balls.
Australia's much-needed win propelled them to second in the ladder
with six points - two behind England. Sri Lanka are languishing on
four points despite their win over England here on Saturday.
McGrath attacked early and could have had Romesh Kaluwitharana bowled
with the second ball of the innings, but the delivery was a no-ball.
In his third over, the paceman found an inside edge to have
Kaluwitharana caught behind by Adam Gilchrist for nine.
Marvan Atapattu followed, edging a McGrath ball to Shane Warne at
first slip without scoring.
In his next over, McGrath had Sanath Jayasuriya (12) caught by Brendon
Julian, leaving the visitors a shaky 30 for three in the seventh over.
Medium-pacer Adam Dale then had Mahela Jayawardene caught by Shane Lee
for nine.
Sri Lankan skipper Arjuna Ranatunga was booed on to the ground as he
took Jayawardene's place.
A section of the crowd was apparently letting Ranatunga know what they
thought about his actions on Saturday, when he led his players to the
boundary in a protest at umpire Ross Emerson's decision to call
off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan for throwing. That game was held up
for 12 minutes.
Ranatunga faced just two deliveries before McGrath struck again and he
was caught by Julian for a duck.
Sri Lanka were in dreadful trouble with 40 for five and never fully
recovered.
Hashan Tillekaratne edged a McGrath delivery that sent second slip
Mark Waugh diving desperately to his right to flick up the ball for
skipper Shane Warne to complete the take.
Right arm fast-medium bowler Lee was brought on in the 31st over and
found himself on a hat-trick.
He trapped Upul Chandana (38) lbw on the fourth ball of his first
over.
Lee then had Chaminda Vaas caught behind for a duck from the next
ball, but Pramodya Wickremasinghe fended off the following ball to
prevent the hat-trick.
Greg Blewett was brought on in the 40th over and struck quickly,
bowling Sri Lanka's top scorer, Roshan Mahanama for 55.
In Australia's innings, opener Mark Waugh hammered a valuable 57 from
68 balls, with five fours. Vaas, while expensive, was the most
penetrating bowler, with 3-63.
