The Electronic Telegraph Salim to rescue for Pakistan
Nelson Clare in Sharjah - 13 April 1999

India put in an aggressive display in the field to restrict Pakistan to 205 for nine from their 50 overs in the Champions' Cup here yesterday.

Wasim Akram won the toss for the fourth time in a row in the triangular series, but Pakistan squandered the advantage of taking first strike in helpful batting conditions. They were reduced to 50 for four by the 14th over, before Salim Malik came to the rescue with 50.

Salim put on 60 for the fifth wicket with Wajahatullah Wasti and then 73 for the sixth with Moin Khan, who hit five boundaries in a defiant 54 off 61 balls to take Pakistan past the 200-run mark.

Medium-pacer Robin Singh was the pick of the Indian bowlers, conceding just 26 runs in his 10 overs. Leg-spinner Anil Kumble finished with one for 27.

Kumble trapped Ijaz Ahmed leg before with his first delivery and a furious Inzamam-ul Haq was run out after Wasti declined his call for a single.

Wasti faced 86 balls to score 37 when he drove Agarkar to midwicket where Jadeja took his second catch.

Yesterday's game was the last before Friday's final between the same teams.
