Blessington Thomas, CricInfo
5 November 1998
HYDERABAD - Hosts Hyderabad posted a 18 run victory over Kerala in the S K
Subbaiah Pillai One-Day Match Played here at the Nuclear Fuel Complex
Ground.
Put in to bat first, Hyderabad lost their openers in the eight over at
33. The third wicket partnership of 111 runs between MV Sridhar and
Vanka Pratap saved them from a tight spot.
After the pair was broken, Hyderabad lost wickets in heaps. From 156
for 2, the score board read 186 for 6 in 6.3 overs and again from
186/6 to be all out 219 in fifty overs. In the century partnership
between Sridhar and Vanka, the latter dominated the proceedings with
some sensible batting, after taking some overs to settle down.
Vanka's first four came after facing 34 balls, when he square-drove
Anantha for two fours off successive balls. In all Vanka struck six
fours while his senior partner Sridhar scored two. In the 39th over of
the innings and left arm bowler Sree Kumar Nair's 9th over, Sridhar
was consumed at long-on by Giby Alex (who overall had a good day in
the field, responsible for two run outs later). After the fall of the
third wicket of Sridhar (47) at 156 (38.2 overs), Hyderabad lost Vanka
(61) at 162 (41.2 overs) quickly followed by the pinch-hitter Pawan
Kumar for 4. There was a quick-fire 22 run partnership for the sixth
wicket between Noel David (9) and Nandakishore (21). To top it all,
Shivaji Yadav chipped in with a quick-fire 18 runs.
For Kerala, left-arm bowler SreeKumar Nair returned figures of 1/32 in
10 overs; Ananthapadmanabhan 2/35 and Manoj 3/47 from their quota of
10 overs each.
Requiring 220 to win in 50 overs at 4.4 runs per over, Kerala lost
wickets regularly after they reached 23 runs on the score board. The
fifth wicket pair of Skipper Anantha (42)and Sanjay Mohan (24) added
61 runs in 75 balls, Anantha dominating the partnership with some
cheeky singles and twos. Sanjay struck 2 fours, one each of Vanka and
Shivaji while Anantha scored one four off Noel David. The
Ramprakash/SreeKumar Nair partnership produced 26 runs for the 7th,
while 21 runs were added by Ramprakash/Chandrasekhara. With a required
run-rate of 8.5 runs in the last 5 overs with three wickets left,
Ramprakash lost partners at the other end, and Kerala fell short by 19
runs.
