Ball-by-Ball Commentary

welcome to Christchurch! the inauguration of Jade Stadium, formerly
        known as Lancaster Park
weather is superb, not a cloud to be seen for miles, warm but
        pleasant conditions
hard and fast pitch, a little assistance for the quicks early on is
        expected
Tendulkar is out for India with a hand injury obtained during
        practice at Auckland
Hrishikesh Kanitkar is his replacement, the New Zealand side is
        unchanged
India won the toss and sent NZ in, Srinath to open the bowling to
Matt Horne, Bryan Young the non-striker
0.1 Srinath to Horne, legbye: one run, down the leg side, tickled fine
off the pad down to fine leg
0.2 Srinath to Young, no run, beaten angling down leg, struck high on
the pad seaming back a long way, high down the leg side but worth
an appeal anyway just to warm the tonsils
0.3 Srinath to Young, no run, beaten outside off! on the back foot,
pushed forward tentatively late, lucky that's all he offered
0.4 Srinath to Young, no run, short of a length, back and defends down
        into the pitch
0.5 Srinath to Young, legbye: one run, down the leg side, tucked off
        the body to fine leg
0.6 Srinath to Horne, no run, shoulders arms outside off stump

End of over 1 (2 runs) New Zealand 2/0 (RR: 2.00)
J Srinath 1-1-0-0
MJ Horne 0* (2b) BA Young 0* (4b)

nice tidy opening over from Srinath, definite seam movement in this
pitch, but there should still be plenty of runs if they don't
suffer early losses like at Auckland
Prasad to open up from the other end

1.1 Prasad to Young, no run, back and pushed off the pad up to short
        midwicket
1.2 Prasad to Young, two runs, first runs off the pad, pushed to deep
backward square, Young calls Horne back through for a simple
        second as Srinath fields
1.3 Prasad to Young, no run, big appeal for lbw, but umpire Quested
indicates it was going down the leg side, it seamed back
considerably from off, but easily missing leg by a mile
1.4 Prasad to Young, one run, tucked off the hip to backward square
        again
1.5 Prasad to Horne, no run, oh dear oh dear oh dear, will it be Napier
revisited again today? angled it down to a diving Kumble at gully,
confusion yet again and both end up at the keeper's end

New Zealand 5/1, Partnership of 5
       MJ Horne run out (Kumble) 0 (3b 0x4 0x6)
they both hang around for an eternity before Horne finally went, a fair deal given Young was forced to walk last time

1.6 Prasad to Young, one run, pushed up to wide mid on

End of over 2 (4 runs) New Zealand 6/1 (RR: 3.00)

       McMillan is the new batsman

2.1 Srinath to Young, no run, back and defended down in close on the
        leg side
2.2 Srinath to Young, no run, seaming back in sharply on a good back of
a length, but again beaten well down leg side
2.3 Srinath to Young, FOUR, edgedy, but bouncing short and wide of
diving second slip, runs quickly to the fine boundary
again he countered for the sharp inseaming movement and it caught
the edge going the other way
2.4 Srinath to Young, legbye: one run, dropped down in close on the leg
side, after yet more histation, they sneak through for the quick
        single
2.5 Srinath to McMillan, one run, off the hip down to long leg
2.6 Srinath to Young, one run, worked through to midwicket

End of over 3 (7 runs) New Zealand 13/1 (RR: 4.33)

3.1 Prasad to Young, no run, tucked to Jadeja at square leg

3.3 Prasad to Young, one run, pushed into the gap at cover point, easy
        single with the stroke
3.4 Prasad to McMillan, no run, watches then chops it into the pitch on
the off side, on his haunches looking for a non-existant run
3.5 Prasad to McMillan, no run, lazy forward defensive shot, had it in
place well before ball was delivered, in the end almost paid for
it as it nearly rolled back onto his off stump
didn't notice it until too late, just went wide
3.6 Prasad to McMillan, one run, pushed up just wide of mid on, runs on
the shot but is almost a bit too slow as the shy is fired wel wide

End of over 4 (2 runs) New Zealand 15/1 (RR: 3.75)

       well wide

4.1 Srinath to McMillan, no run, jabbed out off the hip down on the leg
        side
4.2 Srinath to McMillan, no run, angling down the leg side again,
pushed off the hip to square leg
4.3 Srinath to McMillan, one run, squared around a little judging for
movement, squirts it out into the covers into a gap, enables the
        single
4.4 Srinath to Young, wide: no run, down the leg side, persistently so,
and punished this time by umpire King
Young had a swish and miss trying to chase after it
4.4 Srinath to Young, two runs, misfield at square leg by Jadeja,
through his fumbling hands down low, and they get a couple from a
push off the hip, yet again
4.5 Srinath to Young, no run, defends back to the bowler
4.6 Srinath to Young, one run, back and pushed hard into the pitch and
bounces up down the ground, good diving save by Chopra at mid on,
Young called through for the single but McMillan was looking the
other way dangerously ball-watching in his crease

End of over 5 (5 runs) New Zealand 20/1 (RR: 4.00)

CD McMillan 3* (7b) BA Young 13* (20b 1x4)

in the end it was quite safe though, but this is exactly the
problem plagueing NZ's running between the wickets, just no
        communication and trust

5.1 Prasad to Young, two runs, edgily pushed out through backward point
5.2 Prasad to Young, no run, back and solid defensive to short cover
just mid on and square leg, as well as long leg on the on side
5.3 Prasad to Young, one run, dropped! Azhar has nobody to look at to
blame for that but himself, regulation diving catch towards the
        keeper
missed badly in the end and rolls away behind the slips cordon for
        a single
good ball by Prasad, straight and tight on off stump, Young was
caught slightly on the back foot pushing forward
5.4 Prasad to McMillan, no run, pushed to midwicket, Young looking for
the run but has to sprint back quickly
5.5 Prasad to McMillan, no run, pushed to cover point
5.6 Prasad to McMillan, no run, big swing and a miss, on the back foot
trying to slash it through point

End of over 6 (3 runs) New Zealand 23/1 (RR: 3.83)
BKV Prasad 3-0-9-0
CD McMillan 3* (10b) BA Young 16* (23b 1x4)

his impetuousity had to come out some time in the early stages, it
        has finally arrived

6.1 Srinath to Young, no run, shortish and jagging back into the body
6.2 Srinath to Young, no run, back and pushed back up to the bowler
6.3 Srinath to Young, no run, a bit of away movement this time, tries
to slash it square but it was shorter and he was nowhere near that
6.4 Srinath to Young, no run, pushed to square leg
6.5 Srinath to Young, FOUR, tucked through just behind square leg this
time and well timed and makes it all the way
6.6 Srinath to Young, no run, back and straight bat defensive to mid
        off

End of over 7 (4 runs) New Zealand 27/1 (RR: 3.86)
J Srinath 4-1-15-0 (1w)
CD McMillan 3* (10b) BA Young 20* (29b 2x4)

7.1 Prasad to McMillan, no run, beaten outside off stump, kept inside
the line of it but pushed well away from the body late
7.2 Prasad to McMillan, no run, squared around on leg, trying to flick
it away through the on isde, pops out in close on the off side
7.3 Prasad to McMillan, two runs, goes for a huge swing to a shorter
one going down leg, doesn't get onto it but it goes fine for a
        couple
a huge chip flew off the bat went out to square leg, probably
caught the bottom of it as he was well through the stroke, what's
the bet it is replaced soon ...
7.4 Prasad to McMillan, no run, forward defensive on the off side
7.5 Prasad to McMillan, no run, tries to pull it away through square
again, doesn't get onto it through, rolls away harmlessly
7.6 Prasad to McMillan, no run, big swing and miss trying a tall back
        foot smash through the covers

End of over 8 (2 runs) New Zealand 29/1 (RR: 3.63)
BKV Prasad 4-0-11-0

       beaten in the end

8.1 Srinath to Young, no run, pushed off the pad through to mid on
8.2 Srinath to Young, FOUR, that's Bryan Young's meal ticket shot
leans back onto it and cut behind point, races to the fence
he was particulary impressive in Wellington with many of that
        variety
8.3 Srinath to Young, no run, down the leg side, tries to work it away
        but caught on the body
8.4 Srinath to Young, no run, tries to work it off his pads, but

8.6 Srinath to Young, no run, and similar again, pushed back to the

End of over 9 (4 runs) New Zealand 33/1 (RR: 3.67)
J Srinath 5-1-19-0 (1w)
CD McMillan 5* (16b) BA Young 24* (35b 3x4)

9.1 Prasad to McMillan, no run, gives himself room shuffling across his
stumps toward point, tries to flick it away firmly behind square
        down leg, but misses
not far from the leg stump as it passed by in the end
9.2 Prasad to McMillan, no run, played up to mid on
9.3 Prasad to McMillan, (noball) no run, dear oh dear, I think I'll be
saying that one all evening ... simple catch lobbed up to mid off,
        but Prasad oversteps
Dravid had presence of mind to throw back at McMillan's end, but he
        was back in time
9.3 Prasad to McMillan, no run, pushed back to gully
9.4 Prasad to McMillan, one run, pulled down to long leg, in the air
        for quite a way
9.5 Prasad to Young, no run, back and pushed up to mid on
9.6 Prasad to Young, FOUR, lovely stuff, back and pushed with
efficiency in timing up past the bowler on the on side, nobody
moved, batsmen and fielders, as it raced down to the sightscreen
        gathering pace

End of over 10 (6 runs) New Zealand 39/1 (RR: 3.90)
BKV Prasad 5-0-17-0 (1nb)
CD McMillan 6* (21b) BA Young 28* (37b 4x4)

Young looking in similarly good touch to his innings that was cut
short at Wellington, the only time really being troubled by some
of the early sharp deliveries seaming back into the pad

10.1 Srinath to McMillan, OUT: seamed away, just pushed late at it and
gloves it through to Mongia, he doesn't move but umpire King is
quick to raise the finger while the Indians were never in any
        doubt, already celebrating

New Zealand 39/2, Partnership of 34
       CD McMillan c Mongia b Srinath 6 (22b 0x4 0x6)
       J Srinath 5.1-1-19-1 (1w)

Srinath discovers the key is to not just jag them back impressively
in, but to follow it up with the one that moves away, done with
        great effect
India don't pay for the no-ball catching misdemeanour of the last
over, McMillan always looked scratchy early, like most of his
innings in the ODI series here
Roger Twose is the new batsman

10.2 Srinath to Twose, no run, back and pushes a good line delivery out
        into the covers
10.3 Srinath to Twose, no run, loses a hand off the handle as he fends
forward at a straighter one, trying to work it on the leg side,
        skews away into the covers
10.4 Srinath to Twose, no run, shorter, jabs it down from a height in
        close on the leg side
10.5 Srinath to Twose, no run, back and watchfully defensive outside
off, back up the off side of the wicket
10.6 Srinath to Twose, no run, fends it down to short midwicket

RG Twose 0* (5b) BA Young 28* (37b 4x4)

super over from Srinath, a wicket maiden

11.1 Prasad to Young, one run, dropped! slashed to backward point in the
air, diving attempt by Robin Singh to his left in the air, but
        fails to hold onto it
had it, and almost fell into his hands as he fell, but it rolled
away and they got a single
11.2 Prasad to Twose, no run, back and defends on the leg side
Singh made a good attempt at that, it was going pretty quickly, but
he had done all the hard work in getting to it and getting a good
first grasp, but didn't finish it off
11.3 Prasad to Twose, no run, back and firmly defended up to mid off
11.4 Prasad to Twose, no run, back and defends to the bowler
11.5 Prasad to Twose, one run, gets off the mark at long last, gently
pushed down on the leg side, runs with the shot, a throw over the
keeper's end stumps, but comfortably home
11.6 Prasad to Young, FOUR, super timing, just kept going and going,
teasing Dravid in chase, pushed off his pads as he leant toward
the off side, and through wide mid on

End of over 12 (6 runs) New Zealand 45/2 (RR: 3.75)
BKV Prasad 6-0-23-0 (1nb)

Young looking is real touch, but the rest have looked far from it
        so far
Kumble replaces Srinath at the Hadlee Stand end, a fine spell of 1-
19 off 6 overs comes to a close

12.1 Kumble to Twose, no run, defends to short cover
12.2 Kumble to Twose, no run, back and then pushes away from the pad on
leg stump, up to mid on
12.3 Kumble to Twose, no run, back and cuts away a slightly wider one
outside off, but to Jadeja at backward point, slight misfield, but
they don't contemplate running on it given past terrors
12.4 Kumble to Twose, one run, played through forward of point this
time, to the man outside the circle patrolling out there
       that being Venkatesh Prasad
12.5 Kumble to Young, one run, who's in action again as Young tucks a
fuller one away off his feet to deep backward square
12.6 Kumble to Twose, one run, shorter and pushed into a gap into the
covers, placement gives them the opportunity for the run

End of over 13 (3 runs) New Zealand 48/2 (RR: 3.69)
A Kumble 1-0-3-0
RG Twose 3* (14b) BA Young 34* (40b 5x4)

Prasad looks like he may be bowling out his full 10 overs straight,
        like at Auckland

13.1 Prasad to Twose, no run, fuller, turned to square leg
13.2 Prasad to Twose, FOUR, spoons up a cover drive, but safely enough
low to the ground and pierces the infield, outfield is fast and
it's as good as gone once it makes it past the 30 metre circle
13.3 Prasad to Twose, no run, back and firmly pushed back up to mid off
50 came up in 59 minutes, 81 balls
13.4 Prasad to Twose, no run, beaten outside off, Prasad raises the arm
in mock joy, a few Indians go along with it, but Twose hangs
around as everyone realises he wasn't near it
13.5 Prasad to Twose, one run, misfield at midwicket enables a single
13.6 Prasad to Young, no run, pushed up to wide mid on, a dive from
Kumble at short midwicket misses, but they don't contemplate
taking a run to quickfire Dravid

End of over 14 (5 runs) New Zealand 53/2 (RR: 3.79)

14.1 Kumble to Twose, no run, forward defensive, off the pad out to
cover, Kumble appeals but too high and well forward
14.2 Kumble to Twose, two runs, flowing cover drive, Prasad has a bit of
work in the deep coming around from straighter, but collects and
        returns well
14.3 Kumble to Twose, two runs, tucked off the pad through square leg,
long leg has to come some distance in to field and Twose calls
Young back for the second running to the danger end, in the end
safely as the throw isn't threatening
Mongia relays to the bowler's end, but Young is back too
14.4 Kumble to Twose, no run, driven to mid on
14.5 Kumble to Twose, no run, defends back up to the bowler
14.6 Kumble to Twose, no run, turned around the corner off his pads to

at 57/2, it's more like a start from the good old ODI days
Chopra replaces Prasad from the Northern end, Azhar decides to keep

where he intended it, trying to flick on the leg side, skews out

        the leg side

feet, working it out to midwicket again
16.4 Kumble to Young, FOUR, pre-determined paddle, and in the end highly

        point
16.6 Kumble to Twose, no run, tries to poke it away into a gap for a

this pair definitely in the collection phase now, happy to
consolidate the innings at around 4 an over without taking too
        many risks

20.1 Kumble to Twose, one run, driven up to long off, should be a common
shot for the next 20-odd overs
20.2 Kumble to Young, no run, yorker length, caught on the crease and
has to chop it out on the bump ball catch to Azhar at shortish
cover from just outside off stump
20.3 Kumble to Young, FOUR, a bit short and Young pounces, emphatic pull
through forward of square, and it's so well hit that it beats the
man just a few paces away in the deep
20.4 Kumble to Young, two runs, tickled behind square leg, cleverly
placed and they sneak back for the second as Prasad from deep
backward square and the man at deep midwicket have a fair chase to
the edge of the inner ring to get it
       and that brings up Young's 50 in 87 minutes, 63 balls, 7x4
20.5 Kumble to Young, no run, driven back to the bowler
20.6 Kumble to Young, one run, driven up to long off, ran aggressively
for the first, hoping for a misfield, but it doesn't, only ever a
        single there otherwise

22.3 Kumble to Young, no run, moves across his stumps towards the off

41.2 Kumble to Nash, one run, driven up to long off
