Jet-lagged tourists are bowled out in a chase

ENGLAND were convincingly beaten by 51 runs in their one-day match against a Sir Donald Bradman XI at Bowral, New South Wales, yesterday.

Chasing the Bradman XI's target of 239 for six, England were bowled out for 187 from 42.1 overs. Adam Hollioake top-scored with 67 for England but there was a worrying lack of resilience in the lower order with Ian Salisbury, who made 15, the only later batsman to reach double figures.

Greg Matthews, the former Australian Test all-rounder, caused the most damage by capturing four for 33.

Earlier Angus Fraser celebrated his MBE by taking three for 25 in 10 overs. Yorkshire's Gavin Hamilton provided the chief support with two for 23 off his six overs, while Leicestershire's Vince Wells also picked up a wicket.

Corey Richards top-scored for the Australian side with 62 in a total boosted by a disappointing 14 extras. Richards and Matthews added 80 for the fourth wicket, while Scott Thompson (38) and Phil Emery (37 not out) were also among the runs.

Half of England's team, meanwhile, had only just arrived from home and the other half had taken little part in the Ashes series. Hamilton and Salisbury were summoned from grade cricket in Melbourne and Sydney to make up the numbers.

``We're still pretty jet- lagged, a bit weary and flat,'' Adam Hollioake said. ``We only got in on Monday and had a 6am flight out of Brisbane yesterday, plus New Year's Eve last night. Once we get some time in the nets and the full squad's together we'll be a different team.''
