The Electronic Telegraph West Indies take charge
Richard Bright in Port of Spain - 17 April 1999

West Indies beat Australia by five wickets in the third one-day international, roared on by a 35,000-strong crowd.

After winning the toss Australia had set a target of 242, with the loss of seven wickets, from their 50 overs.

But the West Indies hit back to made 244 for five with six balls to spare, and now lead the seven-match series 2-1. Brian Lara hit a boundary through the covers for the winning runs.

Two consecutive fours by Carl Hooper off Shane Warne had put West Indies up to 218 for three in the 45th over and left them firmly in the driving seat. An over later Damien Fleming bowled Hooper, who played the ball onto his middle stump, to give the visitors hope.

Jimmy Adams made 82 before being bowled by Fleming at 194 for three with 10 overs to go.

Earlier Australian opener Mark Waugh top-scored with 74, Adam Gilchrist made 43, and Darren Lehmann hit 40 while West Indies off-spinner Nehemiah Perry had figures of three for 45 off 10 overs.

Scores: Australia 242 for seven (M Waugh 74); West Indies 244 for five (J Adams 82, S Campbell 64, C Hooper 56).
