Date-stamped : 16 Aug97 - 10:17 Saturday 16 August 1997 Women`s Cricket: Redfern shackles South Africans By Cathy Harris England 227-6 South Africa 148-9. England won by 79 runs SUZIE Redfern returned her best figures in a one-day interna- tional when she captured four South African wickets to steer England to a comfortable 79-run victory in the first limited- overs game be- tween the two countries at Bristol yesterday. The powerfully built Derbyshire left-arm seamer would have amassed her first five-wicket haul had she not dropped a return catch from Helen Davies, the only player to provide any resis- tance, when she had scored 42. The Western Province all-rounder went on to make a determined 64 as the tourists struggled to keep up with the asking rate against a miserly England attack and some sharp fielding. Put in to bat by the South African captain Kim Price, who is also a former Springbok hockey goalkeeper, England made a bright start with Charlotte Edwards, a teenager, and Helen Plim- mer putting on 74 for the first wicket, before Edwards perished when she was run out by a superb throw from the boundary by Cindy Eksteen. Sue Metcalfe was the pick of the England batting, cracking an unbeaten 51 off 58 balls as the home team lost wickets at regular in- tervals. At the end of their 50 overs they set the tourists a tempting target of just over 4.5 runs per over.
