The Electronic Telegraph By Mike Berry in The Parks
First day of three: Oxford Univ (74-1) trail Glamorgan (422-2) by - University Match: Powell in run spree on debut

MICHAEL POWELL, a 20-year-old Glamorgan debutant from Abergavenny, yesterday wrote himself into the pages of Wisden as only the third batsman this century to score a double-hundred on their bap- tism in English cricket.

Powell drove powerfully and was unforgiving on anything remotely wayward. His 200 not out off 213 balls contained 31 fours and one six.

Gary Butcher also indulged in a savage post-tea assault. He smashed his way from 45 to 100 in 23 balls -his century arrived off 64 -as he shared in a partnership of 171 in 18 overs.

Oxford performed miserably with the ball. They lacked direction and length on a pitch begging for such virtues, and became unusu- ally ragged in the field.

But they ended the day on a partial high as Mark Wagh stroked 13 fluent fours in an unbeaten 56 off only 63 balls.
