Date-stamped : 11 Jul97 - 14:21 Destroyer Malcolm By Peter Deeley at Derby Derbyshire (324-7) bt Northants (180) by 144 runs DEVON MALCOLM hardly seems to need the motivational training camp to which he has been called by England prior to the Head- ingley Test. He destroyed Northamptonshire with a five wicket burst in his opening eight overs, missed tea-break refreshment to conduct a raffle for his benefit year and then came back to finish with seven for 35. Perhaps the presence in this country of Nelson Mandela, the man he admires so much, inspired Malcolm. After Derbyshire`s batsmen hit the highest total conceded by Northants in this competition, the fast bowler gave a reminder to the Test selec- tors of his accuracy and speed. Russell Warren lost his off stump to Malcolm off his first ball; Mal Loye went to a juggling slip catch in the fast bowler`s next over; Kevin Curran was yorked and in Malcolm`s sixth over David Sales and Tim Walton went to successive balls. All in a spell which saw Rob Bailey dropped at slip. At 29 for five there was no way back, though Jeremy Snape and Tony Penberthy both hit half centuries to give some respectabili- ty to the score. Northants put Derbyshire in and after they weathered the loss of their openers for 25, century-makers Chris Adams and Kim Bar- nett took charge with a third- wicket partnership of 183 in 39 overs, a record for the home side in the trophy. The visitors` attack did not aid their own cause. In the first 15 overs they sent down 17 wides and Bailey had to use himself as the seventh bowler at the end of the innings. To good effect, be- cause he claimed three wickets, though the cost was high, 55 off nine overs. Adams was in superlative form, reaching his hundred off 112 balls before he decided to charge Bailey and was stumped.
