Date-stamped : 03 May97 - 06:14 Dale thwarts Middlesex By Edward Bevan at Cardiff Glamorgan (252-7) bt Middx (235) by 7 runs WHILE Waqar Younis relaxed on the players` balcony watching his team-mates gain their first win in the competition, Jaques Kallis (72), who arrived on Thursday morning, did his best to inspire Middlesex to victory. The South African all-rounder bowled eight econ- omical overs, then struck eight fours in a purposeful innings which threatened to win the game. But a spell of three for one in six balls from gold award winner Adrian Dale thwarted Middlesex, who required nine runs to win off the final over. Glamorgan, who batted first on a slow pitch offering minimal turn, built their innings around a second-wicket partnership of 112 between Hugh Morris (76) and Dale (100) after Steve James was out in the seventh over. Dale followed his century in the championship match last week with another authoritative innings, striking a six and eight fours before he was out in the final over. Earlier Morris continued his productive start to the season, scoring his runs from 79 balls, before Robert Croft, with a breezy knock, added 57 with Dale in 6.4 overs. Steve Watkin made the initial breakthrough for Glamorgan when Paul Weekes swished fatally across the line, then Keith Dutch, promoted to pinch-hitter at No 3, holed out at mid-off. Kallis soon came to terms with the pitch, timing the ball perfectly off his legs, before unleashing two successive boundaries off Owen Parkin to the extra-cover boundary. Mark Ramprakash tweaked a hamstring early on in his innings but stayed to add 107 with Kallis before Croft dismissed them in the space of three balls. Ramprakash, who was given not out by Dickie Bird from the previous ball, when bowler and wicketkeeper appeared confidently for a bat-pad catch, was out leg before to the next ball, but not before words had been exchanged. Two balls later Kallis was deceived by Croft, who flighted his arm-ball as Kallis, playing for the non- existent turn, was stumped. Despite a brave effort from Keith Brown, with 42 not out off 45 balls, the tail-enders were unable to cope with Dale`s accurate medium pace.
