Date-stamped : 29 Apr97 - 06:17 Jarvis shows way with bat and ball By D J Rutnagur at Hove Sussex (232-7) bt Hants (183) by 49 runs TO judge by the competent manner in which they overwhelmed Hampshire, Sussex have been undermined neither by the depressing events of the winter nor the absence through injury of two key bowlers in Jason Lewry and James Kirtley. They were well served by the three Yorkshire exiles in the side. Bill Athey made a well-paced 66 and Mark Robinson bowled a tidy, economical spell coming on first change, while Paul Jarvis shone with both bat and ball to claim the Gold Award. No less significant, though, was the bowling of the newly acquired leg- spinner from Middlesex, Pakistan-born Amer Ali Khan, who took three for 31. Although Keith Greenfield and Neil Taylor batted sturdily early on, Sussex`s innings did not come into bloom until Athey and Jarvis came together to put on 87 for the seventh wicket in only 11 overs, Jarvis`s contribution being an unbeaten 42 off just 38 balls. Bowling briskly with the wind behind him, Jarvis struck Hampshire two blows in his opening spell, his victims including Robin Smith, whom he defeated with a ball that cut back sharply. Hampshire`s innings could achieve little momentum until it was past the halfway mark. By then, they had lost five wickets and only John Stephenson, who had also done his bit with the ball, kept them in the struggle. He was last out with 65, made off 85 balls.
