West Indies opt for boycott

By Peter Deeley in Hyderabad

25 November 1997

TROUBLES continue to dog West Indies' tour of Pakistan. The side pulled out of a three-day game in Hyderabad yesterday, complaining about the quality of their rearranged accommodation in the town.

The match against the Habib Bank was to have been a warm-up in preparation for the last two Tests of the series, which are being played back to back. The second Test against Pakistan starts in Rawalpindi on Saturday.

Having lost the first Test by an innings and 19 runs, West Indies were looking to the Hyderabad fixture to regroup and to study the form of Philo Wallace and Roland Holder, who could be called in to strengthen the batting.

But after a three-hour road journey from Karachi they found the hotel the West Indies Cricket Board had booked them into was full and they were shown instead to a guest house. Their manager, Clive Lloyd, said: ``It was simply not good enough for four nights. The beds were far too small for our big guys.''

The team returned to Karachi and will drive to Hyderabad tomorrow for a one-day fixture, ensuring they do not have to stay there overnight.
