Date-stamped : 04 Dec97 - 16:18 04 December 1997 Selectors pick Manzoor for last Test By Our Sports Reporter KARACHI, Dec 3: Pakistan cricket selectors picked prolific domestic performer Manzoor Akhtar in the 13-man squad for the third and final Test against the West Indies starting here from Saturday. Akhtar has replaced Ali Naqvi, the only change from the second Test squad which beat the West Indies by the highest margin of an innings and 29 runs on Wednesday. Naqvi was ruled out from contention earlier this week after suffering a left ankle fracture while training on the eve of the Rawalpindi Test. "It is the finest moment of my career. To be selected in the national team is a great honour," an elated Manzoor Akhtar said. Manzoor's elder brother Mansoor played 19 Tests for Pakistan. Manzoor, however, will have to wait till Saturday morning to know if he is playing his first Test. Sources said the selectors have decided to drop Mohammad Wasim and give Manzoor a chance. "The series is already sealed. Besides, it is the ideal opportunity to test a middle-order batsman's skills," sources said. Manzoor had been scoring heavily for the last three years. In 1994-95 and then 1995-96, he scored more than 1,000 runs in domestic cricket. The 27-year-old batsman started the current season in style by scoring two centuries in four first-class matches. One of the centuries was against South Africa at Peshawar last month. Manzoor's selection was very much on the cards after the selectors invented a novel policy of giving Test caps to every local boy. At Peshawar, Arshad Khan was picked ahead of Saqlain Mushtaq and then at Rawalpindi, Aqib Javed was ignored for Shoaib Akhtar. The 13-man third Test team is: Wasim Akram (captain), Saeed Anwar, Aamir Sohail, Ijaz Ahmad, Inzamamul Haq, Manzoor Akhtar, Moin Khan, Azhar Mahmood, Mushtaq Ahmad, Waqar Younis Saqlain Mushtaq, Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Wasim. Meanwhile, the team for the Sharjah Champions Trophy will be finalised on Friday when the selectors meet at Lahore. According to informed sources, tentative team was prepared on Tuesday evening when the selectors sat to pick the third Test squad. Knowledgeable sources said the tie for the 14th place is between Akhtar Sarfaraz and Manzoor Akhtar as the other 13 select themselves automatically. The 13, who are confirmed for a trip to the desert city, are: Wasim Akram (captain), Saeed Anwar, Aamir Sohail, Shahid Afridi, Ijaz Ahmad, Inzamamul Haq, Mohammad Wasim, Akhtar Sarfaraz/Manzoor Akhtar, Moin Khan, Waqar Younis, Azhar Mahmood, Aqib Javed, Mushtaq Ahmad and Saqlain Mushtaq.
