Date-stamped : 24 Feb1998 - 22:29 24 February 1998 Northerns falling out of SuperSport title race Trevor Chesterfield For Kepler Wessels the hope of annexing the A Section title still glimmers faintly, but for Northerns it is almost the end of the line in this season's chase for SuperSport Series honours Northerns now need to win their two remaining games and hope for ifs and buts to take the title. Eastern Province, who won by 148 runs at SuperSport Centurion yesterday, have to do the Titans a favour by beating Free State next weekend and Border must beat Free State. All of which will then require a thumping win over Western Province in the last game at home, three weeks from now. There is of course, a matter of the Standard Bank Cup final at Centurion looming in eight days. But yesterday, the Sky Blues found the task of scoring 368 runs off 91 overs more than they could handle. From the start, yesterday, Eastern Province, without undue pressure, went about their task of scoring quick runs with man of the Match, Louis Koen, undefeated on 104, adding a further 70 off only 46 balls as well a being involved in his second century partnership of the innings - 102 with Justin Kemp. Northerns were never in it and only Steve Elworthy (49), Dirk de Vos (47) and Martin van Jaarsveld (32) offered any resistance as they crashed to 219 all out. Left-arm spinner Shafiek Abrahams took 4/101 in 27 overs. Source:: Pretoria News Contributed by help@cricinfo.com
