KARACHI, Sept 30: The three-member national selection committee meets on Thursday during the third and final one-day international between Pakistan and India to finalise a 14-member team for the first Test against South Africa starting at Rawalpindi from Oct 6.
Two member of the selectorial panel, Zaheer Abbas and Shafiq Ahmad, were at National Stadium to watch the performance of the team and will fly to Lahore for the final game.
It was officially learnt that the selectors will be interested in the performance of Aamir Sohail who leads the PCB Combined XI against South Africa in the three-day match starting from Wednesday.
But the interesting part is that none of the selectors will watch him play and would largely depend on the runs he gets. ``We will see the scoreboard in the newspapers or will ask someone how he (Aamir Sohail) played,'' a selector said.
If Sohail fails, the selector continued, Salim Elahi will have a very good chance of getting into the first Test side. Elahi has just 57 runsin four Tests.
In the absence of Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar is being tipped to partner Waqar Younis and Aqib Javed while Mushtaq Ahmad is set to return to the Test side after missing the one-day series against India.
The likely 14 are:
Aamir Sohail/Salim Elahi, Saeed Anwar, Ijaz Ahmad, Inzamamul Haq, Hasan Raza, Mohammad Wasim, Moin Khan, Saqlain Mushtaq, Mushtaq Ahmad, Waqar Younis, Aqib Javed, Shahid Nazir, Shoaib Akhtar and Azhar Mahmood.
