30 October 1997 West Indies beat National Bank

Aitchison College on Wednesday.

Put into bat by NBP's skipper Shahid Anwar, the West Indies mustered a challenging total of 234 for seven in the stipulated 45 overs. In reply, NBP struggled hard to overhaul the target, but could score 212 for 8 before the allotted overs were completed.

Openers, Stuart William (67) and Shivnarine Chander Paul (40) gave the visitors a flying start of 94 runs in 77 minutes. S. William stayed at the crease for 83 minutes and hit nine fours and one towering six. Chander Paul made 40 off 55 deliveries adorned with eight boundaries. The world record holder of highest runs in the Test and first class cricket, Brian Lara, batting at one down scored quickfire 38 off 45 balls. He hit three fours and one big six. Carl Hooper (35), Simmons (13) and David William (10 not out) also reached double figure. For NBP, right-arm paceman Muhammad Javed claimed three wickets for 46. Leg-spinner Salman Fazal picked up two wickets for 28. Left-arm paceman Naeem Ashraf took one wicket while conceding 40 runs.

NBP's captain Shahid Anwar and Hanif-ur-Rahman opened the innings aggressively and scored rapidly 70 runs in 58 minutes. Anwar scored 27 with two boundaries and Haneef quickfire 35 studded with six fours. The main scorer, however, was Saeed Azad who played with long handle. He scored unbeaten 73 off 87 balls. Four boundaries and two sixes were his major strokes. But, he could not find a reliable ally and the wickets had been falling with regular interval at the other end.

Tahir Shah (22) was the only other man who touched the double figure. Off-spinner Carl Hooper and leg-spinner Rawal Lewis took two wickets each for 27 and 45 runs, respectively. Pacemen Courtney Walsh and Bishop earned one wicket each.
