SOUTH AFRICA'S captain, Hansie Cronje, denied a television allegation yesterday that he had tampered with the ball during his team's opening one-day international against Australia in Sydney earlier this month.

Cronje said he was disappointed by the insinuation that he had attempted to gain an unfair advantage.

The allegation, made by Kerry Packer's Nine Network, was that Cronje stood on the ball during the Dec 4 match, which South Africa won by 67 runs. The alleged incident was not reported to the referee.

In a statement prepared during the final day of South Africa's four-day tour match against Tasmania at Devonport, Cronje said: ``At this particular point in time I can't recall any incident of my alleged damaging or standing on the ball.

``According to reports I've received regarding this alleged incident, it took place while the crowd was being brought into order after having thrown objects at my players.''
