By Chris Dhambarage

Two fine half centuries by skipper Sajith Fernando (66) and Manoj Mendis (67) helped Sri Lanka Colts XI compile a respectable first innings score of 208 for 8 on the second day of their three day match against the touring England 'A' cricket team continued at the NCC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday.

The pair figured in a great rescue act after the side had collapsed to 21 for 3 within the first 30 minutes of play. Both batted quite bravely and added 122 valuable runs for the fourth wicket. Sajith Fernando in particular played a true captains innings and made a contribution of 66 runs.

But more than that his presence at the crease was really important to the team as he carried his side towards safety along with partner Manoj Mendis who also had the credit of completing a half century. Sajith Fernando's knock was studded with nine boundaries and he faced 120 deliveries.

Manoj Mendis too put up a spirited performance and made sure that his side would reach a good first innings total at the end. His knock of 67 included eleven boundaries and faced 125 deliveries. The pair batted throughout the second session while adding 88 runs to their total.

But England 'A' came back into the game by capturing five wickets during the final session through James Ormond (2 for 26) and Ashley Giles (2 for 46). However the Sri Lanka Colts XI late order batsmen put up a pleasing performance with Anushka Polonowita and Nalliah Rajan making useful contributions at the end.

Earlier England 'A' were dismissed for 384 with medium paceman Suresh Perera capturing the last wicket to finish with the best figures of 3 for 53. The match will be continued at 10.30 a.m today.
