Date-stamped : 02 May96 - 14:15 Benson and Hedges Cup 1996 Scotland v Northamptonshire Forfar 30 April 1996 ====> REPORT Bailey and Loye flay Scots By Keith Graham at Forfar Northamptonshire (175-5) bt Scotland (174-4) by 5 wkts NORTHAMPTONSHIRE always had the upper hand on a cold day here yesterday when a slow wicket and outfield restricted Scotland, put into bat, to 174 for four. Scottish opener Iain Philip, equalling the Scottish cap record - this was his 90th appearance - was in confident form and with Bruce Patterson added 75 for the first wicket. Philip went on to reach 69 before being run out but in spite of Greig Williamson`s unbeaten 51, a failure to ac- celerate the run-rate later in their innings left Scotland, in the opinion of coach Jim Love, at least 30 runs short of a really challenging total. Northamptonshire also found the slow wicket and outfield diffi- cult to contend with against some accurate bowling from the Scottish opening attack of Kevin Thomson and Williamson, but once Rob Bailey had adjusted his sights the result was never in doubt. Though the English county lost five wickets, among them Bailey - whose 66, including two sixes and seven fours, won him the man-of-the-match award - it was Mal Loye who applied the finish- ing touch, also clearing the ropes twice in his unbeaten 31. Northants lost the wickets of Warren for one and Curran without scoring and Scottish off-spinner Ian Beven took three for 34, paceman Thomson weighing in with two for 24. The rest of the Scottish bowling proved to be incapable of coping with the onslaught launched by Bailey and Loye as Northants reached their target comfortably in just 32.4 overs.
