St. Joseph's - 7 wkt win over Trinity

ST. JOSEPH'S trounced Trinity by seven wickets with 1.4 overs to spare in their schools cricket match at Darley Road yesterday. Left to make 55 runs to make in 11 overs, the Joes knocked up the required runs for the loss of three wickets in 9.2 overs.

The Joes declared at their overnight score of 183 for 5 made in reply to Trinity's paltry 44. However, Trinity, fared much better in their second turn to make 193.

Trinity's opener and acting skipper Indika Gunawardene, made a solid 80 and was the ninth batsmen to get out. He struck five boundaries in his defiant knock and forced 230 deliveries. He also put on 47 runs for the seventh wicket with Narendra Ekanayake (26).

The two Joes spinners Shinal Warnakula (off-spin) and Monto Perera (leg-spin), did the damage this time with the former ending with 5 for 48 and the latter 3 for 45.

Left to make 55 to win, Trevine Mathews hit a six and two boundaries in his unbeaten 21, while Aminda de Mel was unbeaten on 15 with a six and a four.

Trinity 44 in 25.2 overs (Mark Fernando 5 for 14, Trevine Mathews 3 for 4, Dylan Woutersz 2 for 16) and 193 in 89.2 overs (Indika Gunawardene 80, Chinthaka Molligoda 10, Rodney Raffayal 10, Sudarma Fernando 15, Narendra Ekanayake 26, Kaushlya Weeraratne 13, Shinal Warnakula 5 for 48, Monto Perera 3 for 45).

St. Joseph's 183 for 5 declared in 46 overs (Ian Daniels 49, G. Van. Dort 54, Trevine Mathews 20, Mark Fernando 37, Sudarma Fernando 2 for 69) and 56 for 3 wkts in 9.2 overs (Trevine Mathews 21 not out, Aminda de Mel 15 not out).
