Sri Lanka News Briefs

* SSC took the lead in the latest points table of the Sara Trophy division 1 segment 'A' tournament, conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka.

Kurunegala YCC's joy of heading the points table, after the defending champions CCC were suspended, was short lived as the last week's table leaders suffered a six-wicket defeat at the hands of Police SC.

But SSC, who were placed second last week, beat Sebastianites by an innings to gain the lead in the newest premier league standings after last evening's matches. The Maitland Place Club has registered two outright and one first innings wins in four outings. In the second place is Kurunegala YCC, who have two outright and one first innings wins in four matches, followed by Police SC - one outright and two first innings wins.

* Two good performances by Devananda schoolboy Sanjay Rajapakse (who captured 6 for 50) and a patient knock of 50 with 6 fours by M. J. Dinesh helped Rio Sports Club, Ambalangoda, to score a first innings win over Kandy Youths Cricket Club in the Segment B of the P. Sara trophy cricket tournament match concluded at Peradeniya University grounds.

Heavy rain on the first two days which resulted only in 270 minutes play being possible on these two days put paid to any chances of a decision in this match and both teams had to be content with a first innings decision. For Kandy Youths, Kingswood schoolboy Buddhika Ekanayake top scored with 65 with 12 fours in the second essay to stave off a possible outright defeat for his side after being dismissed for a paltry 96 in the first innings. Chief scores: Kandy Youths CC 95 all out & 133 all out; Rio SC 129 all out & 31 for 2 at close.

Unichela in six-run win

Unichela beat Tristar 'A' by six runs in a nail biting finish in their Mercantile 'E' Division cricket match played at Malay Grounds on Saturday.

The architect of their victory was a well compiled 102 runs by Ranesh Hadunneththi and a good allround performance by the team. Tristar skipper Gamini Nanayakkara made a sparkling 147.

UNICHELA _ 261 for 7 wickets in 48 overs (Ranesh Hadunneththi 102, Bobby Fernando 38, Mario Reiss 34 not out, R. Jeevananthan 31 n.o., N. Welgama 3 for 35).
