The Peterites have experienced mixed fortunes in the current season having registered only a solitary win over Sri Jayewardenepura MV. But they also suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Wesley College at Campbell Park. This was a major setback for the Peterites and from there onwards they really struggled until their final outing against St.Anthony's College Kandy.
In fact last week too they went through some real anxious moments before forcing a draw against the Antonians at Bambalapitiya. Their batting line up have not yet clicked well and this has been the main reason for their ordinary performance in the current season. In addition the team does not possess a single coloursman and have always performed under great pressure.
However there have been some significant contributions from their senior players namely Nandika Herath, Malinda Warnapura, Gavesh de Alwis and Indika Sonal. In fact Warnapura has turned out to be a fine all rounder having scored over 600 runs and captured over 50 wickets for the season. Last week too he proved himself with a five wicket haul in the Antonian second innings that saved his team from a certain defeat. In addition he has two half centuries to his credit.
The Peterites suffered another severe blow during the early stages of the season following the injury to their captain Ramendra Nonis. The medium paceman who was their main strike bowler last year has now turned out to be only a batsman in the side. But he is yet to make an impact in the current season having compiled only two half centuries.
However the left arm spinner Indika Sonal has spearheaded their attack quite successfully and has captured over 50 wickets this year. Krishantha Peiris another left arm spinner with 25 wickets to his credit and the vice captain Laurian Mosses with over 35 wickets have provided the back up support.
Opener Nandika Herath and Gavesh de Alwis are the two centurions in the side and both have been quite consistent during the season. The former has collected over 800 runs with the help of four half centuries and a century against Nalanda. Alwis scored his century against St.Benedict's College and altogether he has compiled over 400 runs.
Among the newcomers Jerome Fernando with over 600 runs, Ishara Fonseka (475 runs) and Mahesh Perera who was a member of the Sri Lanka under-15 team have made useful contributions to the side.
The Peterites are currently trailing 7-11 in the series and they recorded their last win over St.Joseph's in 1978 under the captaincy of Suraj Abeysekera.
