The Electronic Telegraph Final: India v South Africa, Match Report
Harsha Bhogle - 6 November 1996

South Africa stopped by India in final

Against all odds India won the Titan Cup yesterday. Having only slithered through to the final, they produced a convincing 35-run win over South Africa, who had marched through to Bombay with six straight wins.

It was a good toss for Sachin Tendulkar to win because the wicket was expected to play up in the second session. Still, he would have been disappointed with the total of 220 for seven.

Tendulkar himself was in good form, making 67 to finish with 320 runs for the series. And Ajay Jadeja's late assault, which brought him 43 from 42 balls, made a significant difference.

For once, South Africa got a poor start as Venkatesh Prasad and Anil Kumble struck early. Thereafter their strong fabric came apart completely as India fielded and bowled with a sense of purpose not seen so far in the tournament.

At 96 for seven, an early end seemed likely, but though Dave Richardson and Pat Symcox batted bravely to put on 88 for the eighth wicket, the match was always going further away from them.

Anil Kumble, with four for 25, was man of the match, and Allan Donald, South Africa's best bowler, took the man-of-the-series award.
