NAIROBI GYMKHANA CLUB, Thursday

South Africa as expected beat Kenya by 202 runs and ended their preliminary round games with 4 points from 3 games. They are now equal with Sri Lanka on 4 points, but Sri Lanka have a game in hand against Pakistan at this same venue tomorrow.

Pakistan have 2 points from 2 games and Kenya none from three games. If Sri Lanka wins against Pakistan, it will be a Sri Lanka, South Africa final. If Pakistan wins, then the calculator will come into play.

After the action at the Nairobi Club and the Aga Khan Sports Centre the proceedings moved back again to the Nairobi Gymkhana Club where South Africa and Kenya made a change each in their squads.

Darryl Cullinan was out with a slightly chipped finger and in came Herschelle Gibbs for SA. Kenya tossed in Lmeck Onyango for Edward Odumbe.

South Africa won the toss and were looking for a big score to lift their run rate. Their first five batsmen obliged with quick scores and towards the end paceman De Villiers used the long handle to smack a quickfire 20.

Openers Andrew Hudson and Gary Kirsten gave them the start they were looking for scoring with gay abandon. They raced to 77 before Hudson left for 27, made in 38 balls.

Peter Symcox coming in as pinch hitter made a fast 35 in 18 balls. Gary Kirsten made 66 with his 50 coming in 59 balls with 8 fours. Jonty Rhodes was once again in good form making 54 off 64 balls with 3 fours.

Skipper Hansie Cronje joined in the run riot making 63 in 71 balls with 3 fours and a six. Rhodes and Cronje were involved in a record 101 run stand for the fifth wicket which came in 108 balls.

Finally the South Africans made 305 for 8 in their 50 overs. Against Pakistan they made 321 for 8. Of the Kenya bowlers left arm spinner Asif Karim had the best figures of 2 for 44 in 10.

When Kenya replied they ran into some accurate bowling by Brian McMillan and Allan Donald and with wickets tumbling at regular intervals, the Kenyans timidly folded up.

After Brian McMillan fired out the first three batsmen, 'white lightning' in the form of Allan Donald struck the Kenyan batsmen down. He returned career best figures of 6 for 23 in 9 thundering overs and rightly won the man of the match award.

Brian McMillan returned figures of 3 for 17 in 4 overs.

Dipak Chudesama top scored for Kenya with 29.

Kenya were dismissed for 103 in 35.1 overs.
