Date-stamped : 21 Jan97 - 22:15 19 January 1997 Both Coaches Anticipate Positive Play On The 5th Day South African coach Bob Woolmer and his Counterpart in the Indian camp, Madan Lal, both said that their teams would enter the final day of the 3rd test match in a positive frame of mind. Woolmer said that he thought the declaration was a fair one and that both sides could still win the match. "We said we wanted a 3-0 series victory, and we still believe that that result is ob- tainable." He feels that if the team can maintain a good scoring rate without losing early wickets then South Africa can win the match. "356 is a tough ask," he said, "but it`s worth a punt." Madan Lal said much the same: He feels that the match is far from over but that if India can pick up wickets before lunch then they would be likely to win. He was asked which team he would back if he were a betting man and replied "Cricket is my job, and I don`t bet on my job." Earlier Woolmer had complimented India on their positive atti- tude. He said that the way India had played today had kept the match alive and meant that spectators on the 5th day should see interesting and positive cricket. The only difference of opinions seemed to center around the state of the pitch - specifically the bounce: Woolmer and Paul Adams said the pitch was in very good shape and that the bounce was good; Madan Lal and Saurav Ganguly felt that the bounce was becoming uneven. Both camps feel that the wicket still favours the bat and that there is no marked deterioration. Ganguly added that he expected the ball to turn on the last day. Asked about the introduction of Anil Kumble for the last over of the day Woolmer said that this had been expected by the South Africans. Madan Lal confirmed that this had been part of the In- dian game plan. Contributed by Bob.Dubery (dauphin@aztec.co.za)
