Date-stamped : 08 Aug95 - 22:27 Tour Match: Surrey v Young Australia The Foster's Oval, 8 August 1995 Surrey`s scratch side are routed - D. J. Rutnagur Young Australians (322-6) beat Surrey (143) by 179 runs AS IF seeking the punters` indulgence for the fare about to be served up, Anne Bickerstaff, the voice of the Oval, began the day with a recitation of the details of Surrey`s injury list which, suffice it to say, is considerable. With their reserve strength engaged in a second-team match at Worksop, Surrey had to scour the leagues and even reach beyond their boundaries to be able to fulfil their commitment to the Young Australians. Their most prominent guest was the West Indi- an, Anderson Cummins, who is spending the summer playing for Bromley. The team Surrey fielded under the command of Darren Bicknell in- cluded only four regulars and, besides Cummins, just four others with first-class experience -Jason de la Pena, formerly of Gloucestershire, Gareth Townsend, ex-Somerset and now Devon, the Indian, Zubin Bharucha, and Alex Barnett, the spinner who is looking for a new county having gained a release from Lancashire. In the circumstances the result, achieved with 26 overs to spare, was hardly surprising. The Young Australians elected to bat and Surrey must have been pleased to have accounted for their openers, Martin Love and Matthew Hayden. But they were overpowered by Stuart Law and Ricky Ponting, who put on 176 in 29 overs. Law, driving, cutting and picking up to hoist the ball to midwicket, scored an unbeaten 163, off 126 balls, with 16 fours and three sixes. When Surrey replied, Darren Bicknell was caught behind first ball, an out- swinger from the left-arm Mark Harrity, who after- wards bowled short and was gleefully thrashed by Nadeem Shahid, who made 63 off 48 balls, with 12 fours. Once Shahid was fourth out at 86, brought to book by his Essex team-mate of last year, Mike Kasprowicz, the innings went into decline.
