Date-stamped : 26 Jul95 - 10:27 SUNLG: Gloucestershire v Lancashire, Cheltenham, 23 July 1995 Symonds knocks Lancs title hopes - David Green GLOUCESTERSHIRE, having dented Lancashire`s championship aspira- tions by defeating them inside three days, dealt similarly with the northerners` Sunday League ambitions, winning by five wickets with 13 balls to spare after choosing to field first. A whirlwind 47 from Andrew Symonds, who hit two sixes and four fours off only 34 balls, swung the match Gloucestershire`s way after a mid-innings wobble which followed the opening stand of 50 between Tony Wright and Matt Windows. Windows and Mark Alleyne were both undone by Gary Yates`s off- spin and when Mike Watkinson bowled Wright through a drive and Wasim Akram, in a fiery burst, had Monte Lynch lbw, Lancashire`s chances looked good. Symonds, who had just taken 18 off an over from Glen Chapple, continued to hit powerfully. When he was dismissed Jack Russell, celebrating his Test recall, wound things up rapidly, hitting five fours in his unbeaten 21. Earlier, Lancashire had begun poorly with openers Mike Atherton and Steve Titchard falling to Mike Smith, who was awarded his county cap at tea, with only 20 runs scored and the innings never really recovered. John Crawley played some handsome strokes until an injudicious drive resulted in an edge. In turn, Watkinson, Graham Lloyd and Wasim holed out rather carelessly after apparently establishing themselves, so Lancashire were struggling at 154 for seven from 36 overs. When Warren Hegg was run out in a mix-up with Ian Austin things looked even blacker, but Austin then took control, picking up runs without risk until the last two balls, when he drove Smith for four and six.
