Date-stamped : 18 May95 - 10:27 Benson and Hedges Cup Round 5 : Nottinghamshire v Leicestershire Nottingham, 16, 17 May 1995 Maddy cuts dash - Niall Edworthy Leicestershire 211-6 from 49.3 overs v Nottinghamshire HALF-CENTURIES from Leicestershire`s James Whitaker and Darren Maddy left Nottinghamshire`s hopes of advancing into the last eight of the Benson and Hedges Cup hanging in the balance at a sodden Trent Bridge yesterday. Leicestershire have no chance of further progress, but Maddy`s maiden fifty in the competition and Whitaker`s robust 72 served notice that they were in no mood to offer their hosts an easy passage. When the light drizzle became a steady downpour shortly after lunch, Leicestershire were six wickets down with just over five more overs to bat. Nigel Briers won the toss but he may have regretted his decision to bat when, in the fifth over, John Holder, wearing a pair of gloves to keep out the cold, ruled him leg before to Andy Pick. Hansie Cronje was not long in following his captain after he edged a rising ball from Chris Cairns to be superbly caught by Bruce French. But Maddy grew in confidence, cutting Cairns for a six over back- ward point before reaching his fifty by lofting Gregory Mike back over his head. He was caught behind in the next over, though, at- tempting to cut the left-arm spin of Andy Afford. Whitaker, who was dropped twice, maintained the belligerence of his junior partner and struck nine boundaries in his innings.
