Date-stamped : 10 May95 - 14:26 Benson & Hedges Cup Round 4 : Worcestershire v Derbyshire Worcester, 9 May 1995 England can count on Hick again - Mike Beddow Worcs (267-7) bt Derby (135) by 132 runs GRAEME HICK yesterday played his first innings at New Road since last September. Little had altered in eight months other than the shedding of a few pounds since an Australian tour ended with a bad back in Bendigo. The bat, the feet and the body moved as one as he proceeded to 127 not out, and Worcestershire, ending their Group B programme with a third win in four games, closed in on a quarter-final place. Hick and Tom Moody, who made 51 in their partnership of 89, played a different game to others, which became all too obvious when three of Derbyshire`s first five wickets went in 34 balls of deceptive swing from Gavin Haynes. At 34 for five, there was no way back. England could now take Hick`s fitness for granted merely on his one-day figures so far this season: 410 runs from four innings (av 136.66) with two centuries, the latest of which improved on his personal best in the Benson & Hedges Cup. What cannot be deduced from statistics is the freedom with which he got into position. A man troubled by an injury would not have pulled with such force or take three boundaries of amazing impro- visation off Devon Malcolm`s last over. After completing 50 from 73 balls, Hick had less than half of the strike in scoring a further 77 out of 135 from 51 deliveries. Nine of his 13 fours, as well as an audacious pull for six, came in this period. For Derbyshire, a measure of control established by Phillip DeFreitas was eroded by Moody, until the Australian drove to point, and then lost altogether when Hick, on his way to a 10th Gold Award, put on 85 in 14 overs with David Leatherdale.
