Date-stamped : 03 May95 - 14:25 Benson & Hedges Round 3 : Durham v Nottinghamshire Stockton, 2 May 1995 Cairns scores all round - Brian Bearshaw Nottinghamshire (271-5) bt Durham (268) by 5 wkts A PARTNERSHIP of 81 in 10 overs between Paul Johnson and Chris Cairns proved decisive in Nottinghamshire winning with seven balls to spare. It was the third win in three matches for Nottinghamshire, who were without the injured Chris Lewis, and maintains their push for a place in the quarter-finals of the competition. Their remaining matches are against Lancashire at Old Trafford next Tuesday and Leicestershire at Trent Bridge the following week. The game was wide open when Nottinghamshire were 169 for three in the 42nd of their 55 overs, but Johnson and Cairns, who also col- lected four wickets and was the winner of the Gold Award, took them within sight of victory. Johnson stayed unbeaten with 56 in 55 balls but only after he had been dropped on the midwicket boundary by John Morris when he was seven. It was a crucial miss and his remaining 49 runs came off only 32 balls as he steered Nottinghamshire home. Nottinghamshire had been given a brisk start with a century stand between Paul Pollard and Tim Robinson, who went on to a typically sound innings of 84. Durham`s total of 268 centred around half-centuries from Wayne Larkins, Manoj Prabhakar and Morris. It should have been more after Durham had gone into the last 13 balls of the innings at 262 for three with Morris having just completed his fifty in 34 balls. But Durham lost their remaining seven wickets for six runs in those 13 balls, four of them falling to Cairns and enabling him to enhance his final return to four for 47. Durham were left re- flecting on the way the batting caved in. Another 12 or 15 runs might have proved crucial.
