Date-stamped : 24 Apr95 - 14:33 Benson and Hedges Round 1 : Somerset v Sussex Taunton, 23 April 1995 Mushtaq fires Somerset - David Green Somerset (241 for seven) bt Sussex (187) by 54 runs QUALITY batting from Mark Lathwell, 74, Peter Bowler, 52, and Richard Harden, 50, followed by a deceptive spell of leg spin from Gold Award winner Mushtaq Ahmed, who took four for 29, earned Somerset a comfortable win over Sussex. Sussex, chasing a not unreasonable total, started well as Bill Athey and Jamie Hall put on 62 together in 15 overs before Andy Caddick, a little wayward early on, moved one away from Hall to find a thin edge. Mushtaq came on shortly afterwards and widened the breach in his third over. Athey, having swept a boundary, tried to repeat the stroke and was undone by some extra bounce, top edging a catch to short fine leg. Two balls later, Alan Wells failed to detect a googly and was lbw offering no stroke. Neil Lenham was bowled through the gate, aim- ing to drive, and Carlos Remy fell leg-before. Franklyn Stephenson drove Trump for two big sixes but when Harden held another towering hit from Stephenson at mid-off, Somerset were home and dry. Earlier, Somerset had needed some good fortune, having been put in on a firm surface which had greened up under the covers, Marcus Trescothick being an early casualty when he got an edge to lively Ed Giddins. However, Lathwell gradually raised the tempo in company with Bowler, their partnership realising 111 runs in 28 overs before Lathwell, having struck nine boundaries, was bowled. Bowler was run out shortly afterwards responding to an optimistic call for a short single.
