Date-stamped : 24 Apr95 - 14:34 Benson and Hedges Round 1 : Essex v Glamorgan Chelmsford, 23 April 1995 Glamorgan break Essex duck - D. J. Rutnagur Glamorgan (277-7) bt Essex (249) by 28 runs PAUL PRICHARD had a distinguished first match as Essex`s new cap- tain, but his splendid innings of 92, ended by a breathtaking catch by his opposite number, Matthew Maynard, did not suffice his county`s needs. Following Prichard`s dismissal, which reduced Essex to 207 for six in the 44th over, the only challenge to Glamorgan, who had never before won a Benson & Hedges match on Essex soil, came from a last-wicket stand of 28 between Mark Illott and Darren Cousins. Glamorgan owed their daunting total to Stephen James who, stand- ing in for his injured captain, Hugh Morris, made a sound 82. There was a valuable contribution of 50 from Robert Croft, who hoisted the last two deliveries of the innings, from Illott, for sixes. Glamorgan were indebted also to David Hemp and Maynard. Both preyed quite spectacularly on some benevolent Essex bowling, par- ticularly from their new recruit, Neil Williams. Glamorgan passed 100 in only the 21st over, but were then be- calmed by the steadiness of Peter Such and Graham Gooch. The sun played truant when Essex began their reply and Glamorgan`s opening bowlers, Steve Watkin and Roland Lefebvre, made capital of the movement the pitch offered under the changed conditions. Gooch, shaping to cut, was undermined by a ball from Walkin that cut back. Jonathan Lewis played on and Hussain found the ball leaving him to induce a snick well taken by Colin Metson and Essex were 82 for three.
