Date-stamped : 15 Nov95 - 02:30 Friday 27, October 1995 MANJULA, ERIKA MAKES MAIDEN TEST TOURS BY SA`ADI THAWFEEQ The inclusion of rookie fast bowlers Manjula Munasinghe and Erik Upashantha for their maiden Test tours and Sanath Jayasuri- ya pushed into the position as third opener for the first time, are the only significant changes in the 18-member Sri Lanka team for the two and a half-month tour of Australia starting next month. However, there is no room for the one-day specialist all- rounder Ruwan Kalpage whose place has now gone to Kumara Dhar- masena. OUTSHONE On the recent tours to Pakistan and Sharjah, Dharmasena outshone Kalpage in the eight one-day matches to swing the selectors` vote in his favour. Dharmasena also has the plus point of performing exceedingly well in the Tests in Pakistan. Dharmasena forms the spin trio with off-spinner Muthiah Mu- ralidharan and left-arm leg-spinner Jayantha Silva. Munasinghe and Upashantha, both 23 years, along with the 22- year-old Silva are the only uncapped Test players in the tour party. All three of them have made limited appearances in the one-day games. TREATMENT Munasinghe was originally picked for the tour of Pakistan but an injury kept him back, and Dharmasena took his place. Munasinghe along with Chaminda Vaas are likely to be sent to Aus- tralia ahead of the team for treatment if necessary as both are recovering from injuries. Vaas, Munasinghe, Upashantha along with Pramodya Wickremasinghe and Ravindra Pushapakumara form a five-pronged fast-medium attack for the tour where the pitches are expected to be fast with some bounce. 1-DAY SPECIALIST "Sanath has been branded a one-day specialist. But we think that is an unfair assumption. He is as good in the longer game, but the question is where to fit him ? We have spoken to him and he has agreed to open in the longer game,`` said chairman of selectors Duleep Mendis. Jayasuriya`s case is similar to that of Roshan Mahanama. When Mahanama wanted to get into the Sri Lankan side in 1986 he found his way blocked by a solid middle-order batting line-up that comprised Dias, Mendis, Madugalle and Ranatunga. Eventually, he settled for the place of opener and since has become an automat- ic choice for that spot. NEW ADDITIONS From the 16 picked for Pakistan, only Dulip Samaraweera is left out. The new additions are wicket-keeper Romesh Kaluwitharana who will be understudy to Chamara Dunusinghe and the two new fast bowlers Munasinghe and Upashantha. Sri Lanka are due to leave for Australia on November 15 and play a series of three Tests against Australia in Perth, Mel- bourne and Adelaide and participate in the World Series Cup lim- ited overs triangular with Australia and West Indies in addition to play- ing five side games.
