Date-stamped : 11 Nov95 - 18:28 Pre-Season Friendly Free State v Transvaal Welkom (d/n 45 overs-a-side), 4 October 1995 MCKENZIE LEADS TRANSVAAL TO VICTORY A brilliant 115 off just 85 balls by Neil McKenzie helped Transvaal beat Free State by six wickets with almost four overs to spare in the day-night friendly in Welkom on Wednesday. The match, part of the Bradley Player benefit year, produced a feast of runs with Free State, after winning the toss, amassing a total of 256-5 in their allotted 45 overs. In reply, Transvaal scored 260-4 in 42 overs. Transvaal set about their task from the start and with the advent of McKenzie, with the total at 29-1, the game gradual- ly turned in their favour. McKenzie`s knock included 20 fours and he dominated the partnership for the second wicket with Brad White (54) and then with Anthony Pollock (14). Geoffrey Toyana weighed in with a quick unbeaten 34 at the end. For Free State, an opening partnership of 188 in 131 minutes by Deon Jordaan (85 10x4, 1x6) and Gerhardus Liebenberg 93 (7x4, 2x6) set the home side on what looked like a victory path. But then a sudden loss of wickets had them put up the shutters up just when the big hits should have been in order. Contributed by Donald (eitan@rucus.ru.ac.za)
