Srinath sets up Indian victory

Javagal Srinath took four wickets as India avenged their World Cup semi-final defeat with a 12-run victory over Sri Lanka in the triangular Singer Cup tournament in Singapore yesterday.

The Indian all-rounder hit a swift, unbeaten 28 as India totalled 199 in 45.4 overs, then took four for 35, including three toporder batsmen, as the world champions were dismissed for 187 in 48.1 overs.

Srinath removed Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana in successive overs, then Venkatesh Prasad accounted for Aravinda de Silva to leave Sri Lanka at 13 for three.

Despite 59 from Roshan Mahanama and 42 from Hashan Tillekeratne the pair added 92 for the sixth wicket - Sri Lanka could not recover.

Opener Navjot Sidhu provided the backbone of the Indian innings with 94 in 116 balls. He was taken to hospital after suffering from heat stroke but was later said to be out of danger.
