Day 1: Nash gives NZ sole cause to celebrate

First day of five: India are 54-1. Rain delayed start of play

Caution was the watchword for India as they edged to 54 for one on a day when less than three hours' play were possible because of overnight rain.

The match did not get under way until after tea and bad light ended proceedings before the end of the extra hour, with nine of the stipulated 45 overs still to be bowled.

Ajay Jadeja, who made battling half-centuries in both innings of the first Test, which India won by eight wickets, was bowled by seamer Dion Nash for three after India won the toss and chose to bat.

Jadeja, who took 23 deliveries to get off the mark, played back to an overpitched ball from Nash which hit a boot and rolled on to his wicket.

At stumps, Manoj Prabhakar was on 19 while Navjot Sidhu, who came in for Sanjay Manjrekar, was unbeaten on 18. The first boundary did not come until the 20th over when Sidhu drove spinner Mark Haslam through cover. Chris Cairns, the Nottinghamshire pace bowler, conceded just eight runs in 11 overs.

New Zealand gave a Test debut to Roger Twose, the former Warwickshire all-rounder, who has replaced Bryan Young.
