Date-stamped : 08 Jul94 - 18:27 CC: Kent v Yorkshire, Maidstone, 30 Jun - 4 Jul 94 ====> Day 4, 4 Jul 94 PATEL SPINS INTO TEST CONTENTION Raymond Illingworth's assertion on Radio 5 last night that the England team are as yet only on the fringes of spin bowling should give Min Patel great heart today. The 24-year-old slow left-armer did his England prospects no end of good by producing a devastating spell of three for 14 in 12 balls to finish with five for 68 in Kent's 175-run win over Yorkshire at Maidstone - their first win of the season in the Britannic Assurance Cham- pionship. The visitors' slump followed the exit of skipper Mar- tyn Moxon for 122, his first championship ton of the season. Moxon gained good support from Richie Richardson as they shared a third wicket stand of 94 in 18 overs. But having reached lunch at 194 for three, Patel snapped up five wickets in an innings for the fifth time this season to take his total of wickets to 56. If Illingworth is serious about fielding an England side with a balanced attack, and finding spinners who can win matches in the same way Australia's Shane Warne and Tim May can, then Patel should soon find himself in the Test reckoning sooner rather than later.
